I live one and one half miles south of San Pedro so my suggestion is anywhere north of the cut! Just kidding. I have stayed at Ruby's and Aquamarina (although I don't think Aquamarina's is there anymore, I am out of touch with rentals) many times prior to buying and thought they wer great. Have fun!!!! (As if it were an option to do otherwise)

Blue Tang, Carribean Villas, Sunbreeze Suites (formerly Aquamarina. We have stayed at all of them and they were all great, but I have listed them in order of comfort and atmosphere.
Reverse the order for "closeness" to town, tho all are less than 10 mins walk from the central park

Well, the OT still hasn't told us what they consider as reasonable $$, so I'll weigh in and say "Mayan Princess" for location and cool suites, right in town . . . beach area ain't all that. Regardless, that is where I spend the majority of my time lately when I'm in San Pedro.

Blue Tang has some really cool rooms too, but think the prices are probably a little out of line. Sunbreeze Suites might be doable, though I believe it is more spendy than the Mayan. Again, the beach ain't all that.

On one of my trips down last year, I met two mature couples (early 30's ish)that were staying at Ruby's. These two couples had met each other independently. Both of these couples were well seasoned world travellers and as used to backpack places as mid to high end. Both of these couples moved from Ruby's to Hotel del Rio and they couldn't have been happier. They considered the experience of staying at Ruby's and Hotel del Rio to be lightyears apart.

All that said, Hotel del Rio is a bit of a jaunt in a darkish area, after having imbibed of an evening.

Also, consider Holiday Hotel.

Check with Capt. Ron and see what kind of rate he can offer on his place at Tradewinds Villas.

You did not say who many people and how many beds will be needed.
If it is more than two couples you may do better with a house.

Let me explain "Close to town." Everythig is pretty close to town in US terms. I live just across the bridge whick is exactly one mile to the center of town. Many people who rent here walk the beach into town on a regular basis.

The other part is that bicycle rental is very cheap as are taxi's.

If you are more specific you will get more specific answers.

I agree about spending a couple of nights on the mainland to do the jungle tours. I would suggest doing it your first few days here as once you are on the island you will not want to leave.

There are people living here who came for a short vacation and never left - so be careful - be very very careful.

Good point Scubaldy, I was thinking a couple, but probably it's a group. That said, I'd be more likely to recommend the Blue Tang. BT has a couple of very large rooms that would accommodate 4-6 and great location for partying.

Thanks for all the responses. We have 4 people and need 2 - 3 (preferably 3) beds. We are thinking around $2-300 a night.

What do you think of The Palms for our group?

Great location . . everything I've heard is that it is a nice well-run place.

We stay at the Palms. It is really close to town, just down the beach from BC's and Blue Water Grill, and next door to one of the best beaches on the island. It is clean, great view, and fantastic folks working there.

Agree with The Palms. Stayed there a few times and they are always great. The location can't be beat.
