From everything I've heard, by the time you see a barracuda, they have already chosen NOT to bite you, so it's ok...A fabulous guide told me that once and I remind myself of that everytime I see one...It takes the edge off. Or I am lulling myself into a false sense of security...

I dunno Sirenia, to the best of my recollection, I saw the barracuda before it bit my fin.

i kept a close look for taxis and other boats and once we got to the 'channel' it was a sprint. when i did see boats we gathered very very close to my bowie and flag and made sure to come up out of the water and lift the flag up to make sure they saw us. everyone waved and kept a wide birth so i can only assume we werent much of a problem .

How long did it take you to swim out there?

Years ago my wife almost drown me when she met her first barracuda. We were snorkeling off Cancun when about a 3'cuda took way to much interest in her. She climbed on my back to protect her. You can imagine the rest, but have you ever heard screams under water? After that she didn't wear her jewerly when snorkeling!

I bet a case of beer to a group of divemasters to who could swim out and back the fastest 'Chocolate' won over me and all the divemasters from amigos and bottom time.
I came in towards the back of the pack!

AC I would be way more worried about crazy boat captain than Barracuda. How many Barracuda accidents do you hear about vs boat accidents. Then I'm not so sure a boat running over you would be an accident. Seriously, you may want to invest in kayaks.

There are several dive sites where the resident Mr. B will track you through most of the dive. I have some lovely video where I have spent some time "communicating" with one of these wonderful creatures. There is something very spiritual about holding eye contact with one of gods creatures.

azbob that is one of the funniest stories i've heard a while! the cuda probably figured you had your hands full and it would not have been sporting to continue...

AC sounds like you are really enjoying all that living there has to offer! No jewelry next time wink

Its the six foot Tarpons that buzz you close, at full speed and from behind in the Cuts that always get my heart racing.
