Is the reef close enough to beach along AC that one can easily paddle out in a kayak alone to go snorkeling? We are considering staying at either Captain Morgans or Banyan Bay, and want to know if we will be able to paddle out for a little underwater viewing without having to get a boat or guide.

The reef around AC is much closer than anyplace else (per the Map and info. on this board). Its a short paddle out to the reef. Many places have buoys to tie off on so as not to disturb the coral. Check out JaneinPA's pictures...which were just off the beach from Journeys End..which is close to Captain Morgans...

yes the reef is about 3\4 mile out from most of the n. resorts. my wife and i recently returned from a stay at mata chica and we paddled out to the reef several times, all were with very little difficulty. but when the wind is blowing hard in from the reef it was a little harder. have fun and hey when you are in belize as they say "no problem"!!

yup, ralph. there are kayaks at journeys end to rent (free for guests), and they have a tie-up bouy not far out. we tied up and snorkeled right there. funny, tho, one side of my paddle fell off and i had to "canoe" while frank kayaked. i didnt think i could jump in & out of the kayak, but it was no problem. journey's end is just north of captn morgan's. you can walk, bike, cart, or water taxi there.
