We stayed North of town at Journey's End. We noticed on the rides in and out that the reef is pretty far out from San Pedro and south. JER has kayaks and we paddled out and tied up to a buoy. It was over 1/4 of a mile...but that's not that far. (P.S. My 12 year old son and my wife paddled out). The water was waste deep at the buoy and we could just snorkle out a little bit more to the reef. Really suggest bringing you own equipment (fits better and saves money). Also, there is also a defogger you can buy at any dive shop. We used spit..which sort of works. We saw plenty of fish and coral and there was NO boat traffic. We also went to Shark/Ray Alley, which, of all things to do in AC this would be FIRST on our list. Hol Chan was nice to, a little deeper than where we went on our own and some bigger fish. From what I know, the entire reef is pretty much untouched.
