SP Police Enforce Alcohol Law on Good FridayASP Robinson told The San Pedro Sun that she duly gave warning to the business community about the laws. "Absolutely no one is above the law. I am here to enforce the law and as such that is what we are doing. They [the business owners] are well aware of the law and it clearly states that no holder of a liquor license will be open for business on Good Friday. What is not clear about that law?" said a determined ASP Robinson.
While the drastic enforcement of the law did not sit well with business owners, members of the public stopped and congratulated ASP Robinson as she was out enforcing it. The team of officers ensured that the store representatives/owners were informed of their offence and were also informed of the course of action that would be taken. As such the stores were promptly closed in the presence of the officers. Click here to read the rest of the article and see more photos in the San Pedro Sun

Frankly I don't think anyone should have an issue with not being able to sell or buy booze for 18 hours every year.
Change the law? Why?
Do you honestly think there is a tourist on the Island who is never coming back because he was not able to by a drink in a restaurant or bar or grocery store from mid-night Thursday to 9:00PM Friday.
Expending energy on this subject should be reserved for those who have yet to identify themselves as Alcoholics and should therefore seek help ASAP.

Between a no-nonsense OIC of police and a mayor committed to enforcing traffic laws I'm sure we will hear some howling - so everyone who wants to see things improve be sure and give these folks a thumbs up when you see them.

The law is the law; however, it negatively affects local businesses and inconveniences tourists, not just by banning alcohol sales for a period of time. It impacts vacationing tourists as to dining and access to some grocery stores. It seems like a referendem to the people would resolve whether or not it's time to change the law. First time Easter tourists are not going to have it together enough to know to have to prepare to cook and clean, etc. and/or load up on belikin and wine or whatever all the while trying to relax and actually enjoy time off from their busy hustle bustle lives at home. Returning visitors may find it too much not-so-fun as well and may choose to go someplace where they can chill without having to do all of the planning around the law.

I've only ever spent one Easter on the island, and have actively avoided returning at that time of year, ever since. Not being able to get a drink wasn't that big a deal, though, I did get quite a shock when I went to the grocery and my way was barred by an ever so stern looking officer. It is extremely unfortunate for business owners that what should/could be their busiest time, becomes one of some hardship instead.
In any event, for me, not being able to get a drink was the least of it. The town was absolutely overflowing with people, the beach packed with kids and families. It was hard to walk down a street, there was screaming and yelling and splashing and running and laughter everywhere. Probably a great time for the right kind of people, but not for me, that's all.
A fish and a bird can fall in love, but where will they build their nest?

You came to the wrong part of the island. I'm writing this from my veranda in peaceful, gorgeous Mata Grande. Several quiet yet friendly tourists walked by today, few if any boats ..... my neighbors went fishing. All in all it's as peaceful and enjoyable a day as I have ever known on this island. There is a lot of island outside the town core - and if you have not tried locations a couple of miles up or down the island, perhaps you should do so.

Thanks Diane. You make a good point. I was staying in town, as I always have done, and most likely will continue to do. I have also traveled out of the town on all of my trips and enjoy the peace and quiet of both south and north. But for me, I have good reason to stay right in town, and so will likely continue to do so, but not at Easter.
