Thanks everyone for the positive feedback, keep it coming. I want everyone's input

Yes we can look at a 10 year plan, but right now and understandably so I think the New Mayor has enough on his plate for the moment.

I approached him and town council and they said if we want to go ahead and try to improve the road within reason we can go ahead and he will support us, except he has no budget for the north road.

So we can either do it ourselves now, or as champion suggests approach the Mayor to add a LID tax.

I would prefer we all pitch in and the money goes directly into the road and not some circuitous route through TC. FEEDBACK??

I have been driving the road from the bridge right to the end at sapphire beach.

Some of the road we do not have to touch, its fine, high and dry even with all these rains. The further North you head the higher the Island elevates and the ground is much more solid.
exept for a few big ponds, the road is pretty solid past mile 7 or so

We have an excellent working test model that has been there for several years. I am talking about Grand Belizean Estates. It been holding up well and requires little maintenance. Granted it dosen't get much traffic, however it is good and solid and fairly smooth still after all these years with little or no maintenance.
We can just copy their construction model as we know it works.

Some parts have to be filled. Some like the where the road curves back to the lagoon near Portofino's are going to need the GBE touch while others are just big potholes we have to fill with gravel.
The Reef Village road needs to be raised with a couple of small culverts to allow the water to pass especially back of the theater where it tends to flood and at the North end of Reef near Funky Monkey.

We have some deep and long puddles Starting north of Costa Maya. Lets level those out and make a solid bed. So what if you have to drive through a couple of inches of water.
People at Disney World pay big $ to go on the Jungle adventure ride.. this one's free.
It's all the way you look at it.

What can we do with 4,100.

not a whole lot but it's a start and as others see the difference I think they will jump on the bandwagon. IF not we will shun them
a load of gravel is about 350-400bz more or less.
that's about 10 loads a month on a reserve month.
Culverts,, this is where maybe Town Council can help us with getting them at cost and possibly duty free.

There are tons of day laborers around the Island that we can hire to shovel gravel and help them out.

I worked a lot on low budget Indy Films and as such know how to beg, borrow, and beg some more for favors and stuff.

This is where the neighborhood can pitch in. almost everyone has a wheelbarrow and shovels that we may call upon you to borrow, Stuff like that

The master architect herself, Mother Nature has already laid out the blueprints of where the culverts have to go.

Someone suggested maybe an adopt a road program where you can sponsors a section of the road.
Keep the feedback coming road runners.

Maybe someone needs to approach David Mitchel of GBE and ask for some support in the form of equipment. The north road being made passible will benifit all who have bought in the GBE subdivision.

"Considering that property owners are paying nothing in terms of property taxes" ...depends. I pay $300US a year property tax for my condo (not very much) but then our HOA helps pay for the grading between Grand Caribe and Reef Village.

But, what about the $900US a year I pay in bridge passes...isn't that a tax?

I don't accept that we have to do all of this ourselves...there is no reason Central Government can't get a paved road going between the bridge and Las Terrazas. But, just as we had to pressure government to build the road from Distributers to Victoria House so we will have to do the same for a road north.

I will vote to chip in on Capt. Hollywoods temporary fix and I agree that it does not need to be a 10 year thing...we can get the road paved well before that.

Keep your eyes on the big prize: PAVED ROAD = NO BIKES AND MOTORBIKES ON THE BEACH. EVER. It means much higher property values, access to emergency services, less complaints from your guests and of course it means some very happy Momma and Pappy Sea Turtles.

An LID is a tax placed upon land owners for one specific purpose. This purpose would be for the construction of the road. The city of San Pedro would levy it. The payments to the LID have to go to the pay off of the road. The city would have contracted it through the construction company and the bank. The bank would pay the construction company and the LID assessment will pay back the loan in a span of ten years or whatever the time would be set at. This gets the road going and finished now. The city would then be on the lamb for the pay back and it would have the right to take your property and sell it if not paid when due. Could be quarterly but usually yearly.

We own in Bermuda Landing, and our HOA has voted my e-mail as well. It would definately be nice to have a better maintained road going North. But since we're not 100% residents, does anyone know what the status is of the city's plan to finish the road South from the bridge to the round-a-bout? I'd have less issue taking care of the road going North in the short-term if progress was being made on the road going South.

Bumping along on my golf cart isn't much fun, but is there a way we can design it to control / limit speeding? It's like a race car track out there!

PS: Not a big fan of the speed bumps recently installed in town near the schools (the idea is a good one!), but they don't seem to phase the larger vehicles / Taxis, but will surely tear up some golf carts (at least mine as I have to almost stop completely)...

Can I make two suggestions?

Back in the UK, on the country roads and in Scotland the roads are often only one vehicle wide, with passing places ever so often - this makes the cost of paving significantly cheaper. To save on costs how about just concentrating on a single track, where most needed, properly built with a hard core base and culverts and, given people will have to give way/watch out for on-coming traffic, it would probably force people to take it slower!

My other suggestion is to ask the mayor if he would, say, double, the charge for the bridge crossing so that the funds can be used for maintenance of the road north, combined with the cash from owners, it might make a real fund raising difference.

I should add to my previous post that people who buy a monthly bridge pass, should not have to pay the extra charge or, say, only 25% of it so those who need it for work every day are not penalised.
