“We have a three phase program doing major renovations at the centre for the kids and the people that work there. It involves segregation of the dormitories; it involves rehabilitating the kitchen, making gender specific dorms, separating the boys and the girls. When we’re finished with that, which I think we are done with phases one and two already – so this fundraiser and program have been going on for a while. We start phase three which is rehabilitating the female dorm and putting in more personal items like wardrobes and I think just improving the facilities for the girls who are now in the upstairs rooms by themselves.”
Scott told us what the Rotary Club of Belize is doing to raise awareness to the cause in order to garner funds for the project.

“We are doing a public awareness campaign this is a part of it and also doing presentations at the different companies just to make jus the average person realize that the responsibility for kids that fall into our social services area aren’t jus the responsibility of government but it is a shared responsibility and every year, every week there are little things that we can do to make a difference. So the Rotary Club of Belize and myself are asking everyone to sacrifice something; something that you don’t need, think about your needs, think about your treats and desires and think about maybe sacrificing something to donate to the cause. Now, what I’m doing to raise awareness as well is I have done a year’s sacrifice of giving up alcohol, giving up sugar and cream in my tea and a few other little things like that and I am also doing a very big event that I have never done in my life. On my 50th birthday I will be participating in a full Iron Man which is a two and a half mile swim, one hundred and twelve mile bike ride and a twenty six point two mile run and it is an international race with three thousand participant worldwide in Cozumel, Mexico. A bunch of my Rotary friends will be there, some of my cycling buddies, my mom’s flying down from the states and my sister – we are going to be there and representing Belize. It is a huge event, it’s an incredible event – very professionally run – ESPN will be covering it because it is a qualifying race for the world championships was held in Hawaii in the United States. It’s coming up in forty five days – November 25.”
Scott says the Rotary Club of Belize is concentrating on the Dorothy Menzies Child Care Center because it is one of the oldest Child Care Centers in the country and it needed a helping hand. For the Iron Cause for Iron Kids, Scott says the Rotary has done things in a different scope in terms of soliciting donations
