9. TRANSPORTATION BETWEEN BELIZE AND GUATEMALA

1. Fuente del Norte, Linea Dorada, and San Juan Travel Services (Guatemalan companies) provide Express bus service between Flores and Belize City. In Belize City, buses arrive at and depart from the Marine Terminal on North Front Street near the Swing Bridge, and are not scheduled to stop anywhere else in Belize. Buses operate on Sundays and public holidays. Not all buses are air-conditioned. The agent in Belize City for these bus lines is Mundo Maya Travel located at the Brown Sugar Market Place on North Front Street, Belize City. Phone: (501) 223 1200 / 663 5957.
Email: mundomayatravels@yahoo.com

Linea Dorada: http://lineadorada.info/

Flores to Belize City (235 km / 146 miles / about 4 to 5 hours)
Fuente del Norte departs daily at 5:00 am; US$25.00
San Juan Bus departs daily at 5:00 am; US$ 25.00
Linea Dorada departs daily at 7:00 am*; US$ 25.00
* Departure of the Linea Dorada bus is sometimes delayed because it waits for a connecting bus from Guatemala City.

Belize City to Flores (235 km / 146 miles / about 4 to 5 hours)
Fuente del Norte departs daily at 9:30 am; US$25.00
Linea Dorada departs daily at 1:00 pm; US$ 25.00
San Juan Bus departs daily at 2:30 pm; US$ 25.00

This is the schedule from the agent, but there is another San Juan bus that departs from Chetumal at 7 am, goes to Belize City then to Guatemala.

Yes, this is great info to have out there. The buses are smaller and better quality than the standard Belize chicken bus.

I was just going to post the info from the BelizeBus site (my site), but someone just beat me to it. I haven't updated the times for a while, so contact the agent to confirm departure times.

I can suggest a slight variation to Uncle Buck's earlier post.
Tropic Air now fly almost to the border (Maya Flats airstrip between San Ignacio and Benque). Continue to the border for a few bucks by bus or taxi, and then on the Guatemalan side, hire a Guatemalan taxi for about US$50 and go directly to Tikal (most of the public transport will go to Flores).

Hi All,

Thanks everyone for the advice, I just got back from Flores/Tikal and had a great time. I ended up catching the 9:30am non stop bus out of the water taxi terminal and got to Flores by about 1:30 in the afternoon. I stayed 2 nights at a hotel named Casa Amelia. Both Tikal and Flores were great and totally worth taking a couple days to go experience.

Can you tell how much the bus cost? Was it a pain to cross the boarder?
thanks

We paid $45US per person for the bus round trip. We went on San Juan bus line leaving Belize City at 9:30am, putting us into Flores about 1:30pm and returned leaving Flores at 5am and ending up back in Belize City by about 10am. You can buy tickets from multiple vendors either inside the water taxi terminal, or in the booths directly across the street.

The border was no problem at all, 20-30 minutes to cross both times. Upon entering Guatemala the Guatemalean customs agent made us pay $5bz "entry fee" which we later learned was not necessary. She then proceeded to pretend to stamp our passports (she used a stamp with no ink in it). Oh well, not the first time I've been taken for a ride and surely wont be the last smile

At least it was only 5BZ, I think I paid 20 US at the Mexican boarder one time in the middle of the night.

Has anyone done a trip to Tikal combined with a visit to Rio Dulce?
