There are 40 British army personel on the mainland, seconded to train the BDF and give any advice required. The jungle school closed in 2010. And i can assure you lots of intelligence gathering about our 'neighbours' goes on

This is why I wrote they are not "bases" in the commonly understood sense of the word. The PM is technically correct, but there is interest in a semi-permanent presence in Belize (of which he is of course aware) mostly using technology for intel collection. Don't expect a PX anytime in the future.

Base on N Ambergris and a few others on the sea to interdict drug traffic. But they did not buy Williamson; the US does not have $ and has to cut back.

The US isn't in the habit of buying military bases anywhere. They are however in the habit of giving foreign countries large sums of money to combat drug trafficking....I believe in Sep of 2012 the US sent 15 million to the Belizean government for equip, etc. Of course, the US government, for that kind of money expects to be privy and at times involved in the day to day operations of the enforcement officials affairs. The US has a major coast guard presence in the Western Caribbean and a very large military base in northern Honduras. there's no reason to be any further involved in Belize than they are. Besides, Belize has a history of taking foreign money ear marked for one thing and splitting amongst the ruling oligarchy
