I fail to understand what makes you people think that just because you came to Ambergris Caye and purchased property that all development near and north of you would cease. Belize spends millions of dollars to attract people. What makes you think that this island is not going to continue to grow and develop. Sure, I wish that when I first came here 44 years ago that none of you would have come and there would be no paved roads, no traffic, no crime, no dredging, no destruction of the marine ecosystem and everything else that has happened because others along with me have created that demand. Of course that is absurd and I would be naive to think that. And, it would really be an exercise in futility to whine and complain about it. So I don't. I just listen to the rest of you whine and complain.

Also, like I said earlier, Tres Cocos was pristine when the only house up there was Peter Hancocks.
Now thanks to those who have developed there it is just one other part of Ambergris Caye that needs roads and infrastructure.

I don't believe that is my attitude. I know there is progress. So much has been built since I purchased. I am not trying to slow down progress, but it gets a little bit much when people who don't live in your neighborhood tell you how you should feel and that what others need and want. Others don't need and want it, those who want it are those who want to make money off it. That is fine, everyone has to make a living, but then wear it, don't try to make it about guests and what improvements NEED to be made for those of us who like it like it is and do their part not to add to the traffic situation.

Janice,

Unfortunately at the time you bought you didn't buy the whole of the rest of the island north of the bridge. (Let's face it, everything is for sale if the price can be met). Had you done so there would have been no more development. You probably never thought of that at the time, an understandable mistake....

"Those who want a road and lighting and traffic and speed bumps are free to buy South." ....they're also free to buy North.

The only way to ensure you'll never have paved roads, street lights, trucks, taxis and services is to purchase your own little island. Belize has thousands, plenty are for sale.

Chris, I am happy where I am and when the progress comes I will adjust. I can feel good about myself, my purchase, and how I feel about Belize. I am not the one making promises about developing and selling before the infrastructure is in to make it all work. I sleep well at night. For me, I don't need the road and I hope the day never comes that I do. But if I did NEED a road, I would have purchased where there was a road instead of wanting a lot up by Mexico Rocks and then demand that a road be created. Do you get my point yet or are you still in the mindset that "guests" complain so we need to do something about it. Guests complain that we don't have a McDonald's and Tiffany's and Walmart and that things cost more here than in Mexico? Are we going to get them as well because that is what "guests" need. Most people I know live for what we have now and don't purchase and then demand that the area changes. For everyone who wants a road, we eventually will get a road, but that doesn't mean that anyone who bought before that was even a real possibility has to like it or want it.

Quite an extreme way of thinking. I didn't say that I was trying to ensure that none of these things happened. I just really resent the way that realtors and developers go about trying to make it sound like those living in the neighborhoods NEED these things. If you can't own your own thoughts and opinions there is no real need for further discussion. You have a better chance of making development happen because you have a financial reason to do so. I have very little chance of impeding it because I don't try. I only put my money where my mouth is - I pay for deliveries by boat and tell my guests that they can rent golf carts but they can also rent bikes or go via water. My hope is that AC doesn't become South Beach in my lifetime, but if it does, then there are plenty of other islands where I can go. Janice

My opinion is that a lot of tourists come to Ambergris Caye because of the golf carts and sandy roads, not in spite of them. Once those are all gone, I guess the tourists who like simple, unspoiled charm will all go to Caye Caulker or to another country entirely.
