Been thinking about making the Move,, but have a question that needs answering, so I look to the great wisdom of the group for help…. Do I simply give up social security and medicare benefits?? Any words of wisdom will be appreciated.

Most everyone knows you can collect U.S. Social Security in Belize. Strange post. You can even apply for it here at the U.S.Embassy...

Many thanks for your words Cooper. I can see getting a social security check in Belize. But now I wonder how to deal with medicare, through the GOB, with things like paying for hospital bills and prescription drugs. Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Thanks Ernie,,, Your response causes me to wonder what the majority of the expats there do when they need medical treatment or drugs. Do they fly to Miami? Perhaps most of them are less than 65 years and in good health. If so this would cause me to wonder if they would plan to return to the states when they turn 65 and give up their residency. Any thoughts??

Those that can afford buy international health insurance like BUPA or IMG. Rates vary widely based upon which coverage you want but it's usually between $3 and $10K per year.

Medical care is not hugely expensive here and some people opt to pay as they go.
