Hi,
My friend and I are coming to Caye Caulker in October and we are really wanting to do a flight over the blue hole.
Can anyone recommend a company or give us an idea of how much it will cost?
Also if more people were interested in doing it we could share the cost.
For our time in Belize will we need USD? Or local currency?
Thanks
Sally x

Tropic,Maya and Astrum Helicopters all charter. You can contact then for costs. US currency is accepted everywhere. US currency is easily exchangeable for BZ$ at any bank...

Many expats leave their money at their home country accounts for safekeeping and draw BZ cash at the ATM as they need it from their home country accounts.

Dane's advice is sound, we do that. Be forewarned that on busy weekends such as lobsterfest the bank ATM runs out of cash quickly. Notify your bank in advance that you will be traveling and using either ATM or credit cards.

There is an ATM at the Atlantic Bank on CC. It dispenses BZ$. Get your $$ before the weekend as it is not restocked and runs out. US$ are welcome here, but carrying a lot of cash has its risks both when traveling and on island. We typically bring enough cash to pay for lodging upon arrival and a few days expenses, that way we are not carrying a lot of cash all the time. Credit cards are often used here, but know the fees associated with their use.

Can I ask roughly......
What is the price of....
a beer?
a soft drink?
a meal?

Just so I can work out how much to take to the island with me? X

This is so off topic of blue hole flights....but a beer is $4-$6 BZ at most places. You can buy a case of 24 at the distributor for $50BZ.

Soft drinks cost about $3BZ in a store...but i'm not sure, we don't drink it.

Meals vary widely in cost. At small stands you can get a good meal for around $10-$12 BZ. Meals at some restaurants can run $50BZ plus drink and tip. Breakfast will run $10 BZ at a place like Glendas, even less at Marins. Similarly you can get a chicken burrito bigger than you can eat at the split for around $10BZ.

We recently spent a month on island and as I recall spent around $1,000 US for expenses (not including housing). We didn't eat out a lot since we had a cooktop and refrigerator. This included things like water taxi.

Hope this helps. Keep in mind you can spend as little or as much as you like, Belizians are descendants of pirates LOL.

Just a couple of additional anecdotal notes from our stays on Caye Caulker...

Get Stuffed (I think that's the name) is caddy corner from the Bank on Back street. They sell Stuffed Fry Jacks for $3.50 to $5 BZ which can be a cheap quick breakfast if you don't have time to cook your own.

When we went in the summer, I was able to buy some fresh barracuda steaks from the Fisherman's Coop (Back by the Coke/Crystal/Belikin Distributor) for $6 BZ a lb. I made a fish curry with some veggies, spices and coconut milk from Chan's that lasted us for several days.
