Will be visiting Caye Caulker in January. It's been a few years since I've been there and was wondering what the taxi cost is from the international airport to the water taxi bldg. Also, is the cost per person or per taxi?

Last year at this time the cost was $25US which included 2 people and luggage. Go directly to the cab driver. DO NOT talk to the hustlers who will offer to help you with your bags after customs. The taxis are just outside the door to the right...straight thru for in country connections. Make sure to agree on the cost BEFORE you let them touch your bags and get into the car. Most are honest, but we had one driver that tried to up the price $5US claiming that bags were extra-they are not.

FYI....our first visit a few years back we booked the taxi in advance through the agency handling our housing...sounded good but the driver put two couples (we did not know the other couple) AND bags into a way overloaded cab. He charged each couple the full $25US. What did we know we were told the fare was $25US!

It always surprises me that the airport taxi rate hasn't increased in, what?, 8 or 10 years? Maybe longer. Everything else has gone up so much in Belize -- you'd think the taxi union would be getting their piece of the tourist turnip.

When I first started coming to Belize in 1991 I think it was US$15. Then it went to US$20 for many years. And now it's been US$25 for years and years.

Why not talk to the guys that carry your bags? They carry bags, that's their job. You see that everywhere around the world. On the Belize airport it cost 1 dollar per bag. They already have a hard time with all those suitcases/bags on wheels which put them out of work. Give 'm a break, let them carry your bags. If you give them clear instructions, they do exactly what you ask them to do.

Because the taxi is just feet away from where they stand, go through two doors and you are there. It isn't worth it, you have already carried your bags MUCH further. Secondly they are unofficial "agents" for the cab drivers and it was my experience that is the only time the rate was increased beyond what it should be was when my wife involved one of these guys.

I'm not cheap, I always add a good tip for the driver, but the drivers in BC will charge you more if they can. Recently a cab from the water taxi to the Princess cost me $7BZ. On the return the guy wanted $10BZ. Not cool. The rates are not metered like in the states, they can charge whatever you will pay.
