Cooper I spent some time in Hawaii in the 60's and felt the same as you until I visited again a few years ago. The prices didn't seem anywhere near as high as they did on my previous visits. I went into a few supermarkets, restaurants and retail stores and was surprised.

We visited 4 or 5 Islands including the city of Honolulu where most of my previous experience took place. Hardy a good study but prices there may have decreased to be more in line with prices, say in Boston which I'm used to.

Also I just looked at my airline ticket for Belize and I don't see Belizean charges that are way out of line. Yes there are a few minor taxes and an Airport Development fee but the total for the "extra charges and taxes" came to $128 for two tickets.

Now I suppose their could be other fees hidden in the ticket price from United but I suspect it is just a very limited market that only has 3 or 4 Airlines servicing it from the USA. Looks more like supply and demand.

I long for the days of $360 tickets. Lately I pay from $750 - $850 and it doesn't matter if I fly from Boston or Florida. I even looked into flying or driving to Houston but it doesn't make any real difference. Of course if there was some type of hidden charge it would explain what I am experiencing also.

If the tickets prices where more reasonable tourist income would increase greatly I believe. Many guest who want to visit me in Belize shy away because of the ticket prices. Maybe that is a good thing for me but not the country overall.

The airline fees are in the proposed budget put forth by both parties of the Senate. It's already expensive to fly in and out of Houston, as compared to Las Vegas......

Also, while you can fly to Miami (another hub) from say Boston for a reasonable price the fare to go on to BZE is quite high for a much shorter trip. There is some thing going on there but I'm not sure just what it is. Cooper could very well be right on and the fees are hidden it is a mystery that has gone on for several years now.

My trip is for 2 was paid for with air miles but here is the breakdown from my confirmation.

Fare Breakdown
Airfare: 0.00 USD
U.S. Customs User Fee: 5.50
U.S. Immigration User Fee: 7.00
U.S. APHIS User Fee: 5.00
September 11th Security Fee: 7.50
Belize Airport Development Fee: 18.00
Belize Conservation Tax: 3.75
Belize Passenger Service Charge: 15.00
Belize Security Tax: 2.50
Per Person Total: 64.25
USD
eTicket Total: 128.50USD

The airfare you paid on this itinerary totals: 0.00 USD
The taxes, fees, and surcharges paid total: 128.50 USD

I do not see any airport fees and I'm flying from RSW to IAH so there are 3 airports each way involved. Again if there is a large fee charged by BZE or IAH it must be hidden somewhere. If it isn't then the high fare must be supply and demand.

Every airport has passenger fees.......except Vegas........The problem with BZE is that their fees, including departure tax add about $100 to the ticket.........
