You say your husband is of Mexican descent, why not consider Mexico? It is cheaper than Belize and has a lot to offer. Yes, there are bad areas, but there are bad areas everywhere. There is much good as well.

If Belize is your choice, I agree with the folks who say to look on the mainland. Islands are expensive places to live, as are tourist areas.
