Good morning,

Jane and I have enjoyed many visits to Ambergris Caye (and the mainland for excursions) but realize there is far more to Belize than one island. We're considering a two week visit later this year to Placencia and was curious what others would say are the similarities and differences. Jane and I enjoy tranquility and never got involved in the bar/night life in San Pedro. But we do enjoy the great local restaurants and wonderfully charming people. I've always missed a more "swimmable" beach and the ability to walk into the water and snorkel around. We enjoy the remoteness of North AC although that is somewhat diminished by the new road going north. We enjoy being able to bicycle/walk along the beach and in town. How do the two locations compare for all of the above plus costs, accommodations, risk of crime, mosquitoes, etc.?

Should we rent a car so we can drive from Belize City and have a vehicle, or fly TA. Do we need a golf cart or transport once we arrive.

I would welcome thoughts on what we can expect if we visit Placencia, probably sometime this summer to catch the whale sharks. Thanks so much for any advice and guidance!

Rent a car and drive down. Visit Toledo district with many grt attractions. Hike Cockscomb. Look at Maya Beach area for quiet quaint places to stay. Peninsula is 16 miles long. Go before Oct 15, when cruise ships will destroy the very essence of why visited in the first place. www.placencia.com

You need a car. there Island/Peninsula has a road much like a highway and a car is necessary to see the place. Not at all the same as San Pedro.
I agree you should go before the cruise ship arrival screws the place.
