We have been fortunate enough to travel a good part of this globe and not once can remember being thankful the airport was a few miles closer to my destination. A guest mentioned the other night 'with that kind of money we could pave all the streets, put in proper water, sewage drainage and have money to build another Airstrip much like the one in town, then everybody wins'...... I kind of like that idea too.

One thing to note - the $100 Million (if it ever manifests) is/would be a private investment in a commercial venture. Saying "we" could use this money for something else isn't quite right because nobody is just going to give it to us.

New airport in Ambergris will not upstage P.G.I.A.

Earlier this week, the Government of Belize signed a memorandum of understanding with developer International Airport Alliance Belize Limited to develop and manage a hundred-million U.S. dollar full service international airport in North Ambergris Caye, to be named after tourism pioneer Efrain Guerrero. San Pedro native and booster Manuel Heredia, the Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, is doubly pleased about the project, which he says will only enhance Ambergris Caye's already glittering reputation. But not, he maintained, at the expense of the Philip Goldson International Airport, which has been in service since 1943 and is protected from losing any of its high-volume traffic.

Manuel Heredia Jr., Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation

"That group has a track record of doing several international airports including most recently in Curacao, recently completed. We presume that when this starts and it's completed, this supposed to be able to accommodate twelve wide-bodied aircraft. Particularly, it is more envisioned for charters and private aircraft. But commercial airlines are already talking to us [about] what [is] the possibility about daily flights, passenger flights; that is yet to be discussed but at this point it is mostly charters and private aircraft. We have an agreement that any flight that is destined for P.G.I.A., cannot be diverted anywhere else; so anything that will happen has to be something new."

Aaron Humes

"So it would be new carriers or new flights from a particular carrier?"

Manuel Heredia, Jr.

"At this point it would be new carriers, particularly charter carriers, and private aircrafts."

San Pedro airport developer is convicted fraudster, court documents show
Jorge Abraham Jaen, the businessman who the government of Belize signed a memorandum of understanding with on Wednesday for the US $100 million Efrain Guerrero International Airport on San Pedro, is a convicted conman. Jaen was arrested in Miami in 2006 on charges of fraud. Court documents show Jaen has a long history of fraud pre-dating that 2006 arrest as well.

Is this a surprise. These preposterous ideas pop up regularly. Conmen fish in Belize because the public bites. Government is either blind and dumb to this type of con or a part of it.

Just heard an interesting argument why there can never be an international airport on North Ambergris Caye. Apparently during the presentation of the Airport Authority at the last BETEX, it was said that because of the proximity to the Mexican border it is impossible to land and take off without crossing into Mexican Airspace.

There are many more reasons why the airport is not practical. All planes coming from or departing to the north would have a flight plan that included Mexican air space.

Yes of course that makes sense..... Mexican Air space .... Sooooo many reasons..... However, what do you folks think about another airstrip? Maybe like the Municipal? I can see that in the future.....
