We have 2 weeks in late June, early July for our Belize vacation, basically 1 week each on AC and Caye Caulker. We are two adults and a 17 year old. For those of you who have been and done, what are your recommendations for the 2 "must do"family activities/tours? I already have 2 days with George Bradley fly fishing the flats. Which of the ruins are the most interesting to visit? Tikal is just too expensive!

One other question, will it be safe for my son to independently walk around the islands, or is that asking for trouble? It sure sounds friendly and safe there but I have to ask. Thanks for your help!

i would look into spending a few nights in cayo. rent a 4x4, see some ruins, jungle, fauna. it is well worth it.

I do not have kids but I are a teacher. Yes, IMAHO personal safety is not an issue on the island, because it is an island. there is no place to go. Students will/may be solicited to buy marijuana. Althoughthat has never happened to me on the island,[ I look like a cop]. Is the issue if parents trusts the children? I hope I don't sound like a smarta**. Marijuana is a cash crop on the islands. Alcohol may be sold to minors also.

Yes, that would be my concern, too. We were there ten days and solicited to buy drugs three times --- and we're over-50 Old Fogies and definitely not of an appearance that would make anyone think we were open to toking down. Trusting your kids is one thing. Knowing that they can't be pressured is another. I think I'd prep them on how to extract themselves from such a situation as quickly as possible. That would be a whole lot better than having a passport taken or a 17 year old detained for questioning by one of San Pedro's finest.

My husband and I just returned from a week in Ambergris Caye. We loved the laid back beach attitude, Did some snorkeling half day trips.
I suggest: Hol Chan Reserve.Shark Alley snorkle trip
AND
You must do a trip to the ruins. We just did the day trip and it was so awesome. The bus ride seeing the mainland. Brought us back to our days in Africa, and gives you a good perspective on life.

Altun Ha were cool easy ruins to get to

I highly recommend cave tubing with Seaduced. We absolutely loved it! Our group had people from 2yrs old to about 60 yrs old.

Can anyone compare the trips to Lamanai Ruins for $125 vs. Altun Ha for $60?? Is Lamanai worth the extra?? Thanks, Steve

The snorkeling trips departing from Caye Caulker are much cheaper than those departing from San Pedro, for the same stops. The Hol Chan snorkeling trip makes a stop at the Hol Chan Marine Park, Shark / Ray Alley, the Coral Gardens, and San Pedro for lunch - cost $35 U.S. per person. Manatee Watching trip (3 stops: to see the manatees in their natural habitat, snorkeling at Goff's Caye, and a stop on the return at Shark / Ray Village) is $37.50 U.S. per person.

I would also recommend either cave tubing ($107.50 U.S. per person) or the Lamanai Maya Ruins ($107.50 U.S. per person).
