Plan on doing some tours, but wondering if there are places close to shore to explore on our own? Trying to decide if it's worth travel weight to haul our own gear to explore outside of tours.

Hey, only snorkeling that you would be able to do on your own while seeing a few stuff would be renting a kayak and paddling out to the reef. There are a few buoys that you can tie up on and do your own free snorkeling, in most cases you dont see not near as much as visiting Hol Chan & Shark Ray Alley or Mexico Rocks but its still ok snorkeling.

Thanks Rush. Still leaning on bringing everything, but the fins. Just feeling like I'll be disappointed if I don't do it. Right now, tired of sub zero temps so all I'm thinking of is warm water and beaches.

Snorkel gear rentals run around $5-10 USD per day rental. Kayaks are about $15 USD per hour. You cannot kayak in the marine parks without a guide.
