The migratory tarpon are back in a big way!!! We have had several 100+ pound fish hooked in the past week, but those monster fish have not been very cooperative, spitting hooks and parting leaders. Maybe they are camera shy. Craig Kautsch, hosting a group from Fort Worth, managed to hook and land two poons over 70 pounds in one day. Anglers are reporting lots of fish, with several good shots each day. Permit, when targeted, have been seen in great numbers. Expect to have shots at singles, small pods and large schools. A variety of flies have been snubbed by these finicky critters. Crab patterns are producing the best catches, however. The bonefish around Ambergris Caye are very reliable, greedily eating a well presented fly. Casting into mudding schools is the easiest way to catch these ghosts of the flats. For the angler wanting a challenge, there is plenty of skinny water to hunt tailing and cruising fish .
If you want any changes or additions, please let me know.
Fish hard,

Thanks Marty for the great report! Sounds like they are biting. My husband and I will be there mid July. we fished with George Bradley last year and had a pretty good day. we booked him through the VH and I think we probably paid more for doing it that way. Can he be booked directly does anyone know? Can anyone recommend any other guides in case he is booked when we get down there? I have heard Hillyboo and Nesto. Any thoughts, anyone?? Thanks

Yes! Captain Gerry Ack, who can be found at the Sol Caribe pier but not this week as he is helping Izzy sail Xaloc to Belize (and making sure everyone eats, so you know he can find fish if you've been reading the journals.

the best fishing info is at: //AmbergrisCaye.com/fishing/
There are prices, what to fish with, what to catch, lotsa good info there.
There there are also local folks who guide, who are not listed on the link above, and I will list a few of them...
The Guerrero brothers I've spent time with and know they have an environmental attitude. They give value while still leaving some fish for others. Everyone raves about their beach BBQ. Severo and his brother, Ramon Guerrero. Either one can give you a great day of fishing. Call Severo from the US @ 011 501 26 2324. Call Ramon @ 011 501 26 2325. They have been doing honest, reef friendly fishing for many years. They can also take you and your family on a full-day fish/snorkel trip for $150US...one of the best bargains on the island when you figure in the beach BBQ w/ your catch. You won't find a better value in San Pedro. Price is for the boat for the day, I think up to 4 people. The Guerrero brothers live next door to each other. If one is booked, ask for the other one. Good luck! Remember, take some and leave some.
Some don't advise you about catch and release. Some will let you fish all day without regard to limit (although there is none, common sense should take over). Some charge too much for too little.
Omar Arceo, does a heck of a job. Gilberto or Tomas arranged by Amigo's de Mar...
A great guide and very pleasant individual is Luis Caliz in San Pedro, phone number 011-501-26-2785. Best time to catch him by phone is after 6 PM
Nesto Gomez { a very good guide}-- one of the best tarpon and bonefish flyfisherman! He works out of El Pescador.
For flat fishing call Eloy Gonzalez at 026-2337
Pedro (Pete) Graniel. First rate equipment, including boats, and does both offshore, reef and inshore (tarpon, etc.) Keeps his boat just south of town. Ask anyone how to contact him. He's well known.
A friend went with a guy named Vince Dawson, and their bonefishing and reef fishing experience was "legendary", according to them. We saved enough for a barbecue the next day (grouper and snapper) and it was possibly the best tasting fish we had ever experienced. Apparently they made contact with him thru Rubys.
Contact Hillyboo @ Freedom Tours, he is personal, and you go by yourselves... You can reach him when you get to the islands at 011501149515. ==================== FOR FISHING FROM SHORE- DETAILS: //ambergriscaye.com/message/Forum4/HTML/001859.html =============

Ditto on the recommendation for Ramon Guerrero. Husband and I went on an all-day reef fishing trip with him in April. When they weren't hitting he was really working to find us a place where they were. Last three catches of the day were barracuda which were my husband's "must catch" and they made the trip for him. The shore lunch up at Kitty's was delicious and the well-maintained bathrooms were a welcome sight! I'm not a fish-lover but Ramon does something with grilled fish that rivals the best steak around. Enjoy!

Ramon is a trooper....worked hard for us all day, with a great 'tude and we landed bone, permit and maybe the big third, tarp but it broke off....he doesn't charge enough but gives a 20% discount for flies....if only flies could be bait!!!!!
