The latest coronavirus patient is a businessman whose livelihood is scrapping vehicles. His wife, who is also part of the contact tracing exercise, is a clothing vendor at the San Ignacio market. Both have informed the Ministry of Health that they have traveled across the country and have had contact with several other persons prior to the diagnosis. The Director of Health Services says that the mapping exercise will be broadened.

One New COVID Case

The latest COVID-19 test results were released just a few minutes ago - and it shows one new case.

It's an elderly woman who came in through the repatriation process. She has underlying heart conditions, so she was allowed to quarantine at home due to her condition. Presently, she is now showing any symptoms.

The good news is that a further set of samples collected from contact tracing in Blue Creek all came back negativ

COVID-19 CASES 41 AND 42 DETECTED

A further 66 samples were processed earlier today, most of these samples being from the flight that arrived on the flight of Friday, July 17th.

We have identified two further cases of COVID-19, both are males.

One person came in through the Western Border from Guatemala and has been quarantined since he arrived in the country and the second case is from the returning flight on Friday. Both cases are asymptomatic and remain under quarantine.

We currently have 18 active cases, the majority in Orange Walk but all cases are under quarantine.

Our enhanced surveillance continues.

COVID-19 UPDATE

A further 83 samples were processed today.
In this list, we have 2 persons that have recovered and 3 persons that remain reactive beyond the 14 days of being in quarantine.

We have also identified a further cluster of 4 cases, this is a new cluster linked to another illegal crossing. The 4 cases are in one single family from a community in Orange Walk; the contact tracing and further mapping of these 4 new cases and their potential contacts has started. Once more information is available, that will be provided to all.

Orange Walk district remains the entity with the most active cases and in most instances tied to illegal crossings.

Our call is therefore for ongoing prevention measures to continue to be implemented at all levels.

We need to remain vigilant, practice physical distancing, wear a mask when in public or whenever physical distancing is not possible, avoid large gathering or unnecessary public outings and proper hand hygiene.

COVID-19 Update | July 24, 2020

A further 58 samples were processed today and this is our infographic.

In this we have recovered a case.
We have also identified a new case, this is another family member of the 4 cases identified yesterday so this makes a cluster of 5 total cases.

The initial contact tracing for these cases has concluded and while the family acknowledges that they had been across the border in the month of June due to a family emergency, the link that we are following is a family member that lives on the Mexican side and who had continued to visit the family over the last weeks.

This family has been in virtual isolation since they returned from Mexico and there is no evidence that they left the isolated farm from where they were picked up.

For now, there are no identified close contacts of them or any other family members that is considered as a highly suspect case. The community has also not provided any further notes of possible contacts.

These last 5 cases are therefore a cluster linked to illegal crossings along the Orange Walk District.

The Orange Walk District now registers the highest number of total and active cases.

8 New Cases of Covid-19 Detected

COVID-19 Update from Office of Director of Health Services

As we continue with our enhanced surveillance, we have to report a record number of positive cases in any single day as we have detected 8 new cases in the batch of samples completed today.

The breakdown of the 8 cases is as follows:

- 3 in the Central Health Region:

2 from the repatriation flight from the US and 1 from the repatriation flight from Honduras. These persons are asymptomatic and are in hotel quarantine.

- 5 cases in the Northern Health Region:

3 in Corozal Town:

2 came in through the Mexican border entry point as part of the repatriation process and are in hotel quarantine, they are also asymptomatic.

The third case has no travel history nor does she refer having been in contact with any known COVID-19 case; this person is a female with respiratory symptoms and is currently hospitalized. The contact tracing for this particular case has started.

2 cases in Orange Walk Town:

1 case in that of someone who crossed the border illegally, this person is asymptomatic and is being held at quarantine facility.

The second case has no travel history nor does he refer having been in contact with any known COVID-19 case; this person is hospitalized with symptoms. The contact tracing for this particular case has also started.

Out of the 8 cases today, the two cases that warrant in depth investigation are the ones hospitalized as they don't have any reported link outside of Belize so far. As soon as further information is available, that will be shared with all.

Please continue to stay safe all and do exercise all prevention measures at all times.

===============

Two new COVID cases of unknown origin include one police officer.

Reports reaching 7News indicate that a constable in Corozal has tested positive for COVID 19 and is hospitalized and recovering. As a result all the officers at this station (more than a dozen) have been placed on quarantine.

The Ministry of Health says this police officer is one of two hospitalized cases which will require extensive contact tracing as they don't seem have any link outside of Belize so far.

Reports also suggest that police officers in Orange Walk who caught a border jumper on Friday may be tested for COVID since the jumper, a Belizean, has since tested positive.

Police Commissioner Chester Williams has urged officers to use PPE's, but our information suggests it has not been a consistent practice. For weeks, Police officers have been the first and frontline responders to intercept and detain border jumpers.

Case 57 confirmed in San Pedro

COVID-19 update from Office of Director of Health Services

Given a highly suspect case we had in the island of San Pedro, a test was ran and we have confirmed case #57 on the island.

This case is that in a female who presented with fever and respiratory symptoms and is currently being managed on the island. This female denies any travel history and contact tracing for possible source of infection is currently underway. Once further information is known, we will be informing all.

In terms of the case in Orange Walk, we have been able to trace contacts involved in the contraband of goods so that investigation is ongoing.

In terms of the case in Corozal, no specific contact has been ascertained.

Both of these cases remain hospitalized and are currently stable.
