KHMH current hospitalized cases

We have activated our Alternate Emergency Area. Please be advised.
- Corozal has one hospitalized case, highly suspect for COVID-19
- NHR has two hospitalized cases
- WHR has one hospitalized case, highly suspect

KHMH has 4 ventilated patients, all confirmed cases and 5 confirmed, non-ventilated patients.

The KHMH has 16 ventilators for COVID-19 cases, these are outside of their routine ICU care.

The move as per advisory is according to the plan and is done to enhance the flow of patients through the A&E for non COVID-19 cases.

While the concern is the overall bed capacity beyond just ventilators, we do want to continue to stress the overall importance of prevention as we do want to keep the hospitalization rate at the lowest possible levels.

Please be kind to our health care workers across all settings as they continue to work in COVID-19 times.

COVID Deaths Double Over Weekend

When we left you on Friday, there were 5 COVID deaths; tonight, there are 10. The death toll doubled over the weekend, while the number of confirmed cases increased by 65 from 648 to 713, with 658 active cases.
Today on Ask the Experts, the Director of Health Services discussed the last four cases whited racked up in quick succession - including Verna Gladden, a new mother who had just delivered her daughter by C-Section.

Dr. Manzanero begins his recounting with the death of San Felipe resident Natalio Wicab on Saturday night:

Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services
"The 7th patient that died is a patient from San Felipe who arrive in distress at the Northern Regional hospital, sent to Karl Heusner almost immediately and the patient died on arrival at Karl Heusner. The diagnosis in this patient was done post-mortem that was done yesterday. We had flagged it yesterday as a potential 7th case dying as a result of Sars Covid 2. I did speak with one of the family members who didn't seem to think that his dad was a case of Sars Covid 2. This is before we had the diagnosis. They did not refer any contact with any particular person and that would have been positive for Sars Covid 2. Again, this is what they are feeding to us. The patient has a following comorbidities that I think we need to describe as a diabetic type 2. He also suffers from hypertension and have had a previous myocardial infarction, so when he started having some level of respiratory distress on Friday/ Saturday - from what the family member shared with me is that they were thinking he was having some level of __ from his previous cardiac condition. Because they nebulize him and when he wasn't improving is when they took him to the Northern Regional hospital on Saturday and he died at Karl Heusner upon arrival."

"The 8th patient that died also arrived at Northern Regional hospital in respiratory distress is a 65 year male. Had not have previous interactions with the health system. Family members then refer that he had been having fire days with flu and fever-like symptoms, but they had not access health services. As a matter of fact the other 3 family members that were in the immediate close contact with this patient were only swab until after their dad had died. This patient had died almost upon arrival. He was swabbed because of the high suspicion and diagnosis was also made post mortem. And the other 2 patients that have died happened earler today, 1 patient from Corozal, Caledonia to be specific in his late 50s. He had been referred to Karl Huenser middle of last week, also a patient with respiratory distress. When he was initially sent to Karl Huesner there was no diagnosis. That diagnosis came after he arrive at Karl Huesner and he died in the early hours of this morning and the 10th patient that had died as a result is the pregnant female who had delivered by C-section and had been discharge from the hospital last weekend and came back within 24 hours to Karl Huesner with respiratory distress. We are assuming she had a Pulmonary embolism, massive and that would brought back to the hospital. It would seem therefore in the last 5 of those cases we have had clots that would have trigger a myocardial infarction, clot in the lungs. We have a patient still at Karl Huesner who had a stroke, a 85 year old male who is also positive for Sars Covid 2, not intubated, not ventilated, he might actually be discharged any time now."

We note that of those four deaths, two are from villages in the north, one from san Pedro and one from the City.

Verna Gladden was laid to rest today.

Her newborn - is reported to be doing well, even as Verna's mother is at home with COVID 19.

In terms of the 94 cases reported yesterday, this is the breakdown per community.

Please note that by no means does this mean that the communities not included can be considered to be in the clear, as we move along, we have to assume that all communities are affected.

It saddens us to note that big parties are still being reported in communities across the country, this will not help in flattening any curve.

Stay home unless you really have essential activities away from home.
