The municipal elections are scheduled to be held on the first Wednesday in the month of March, 2021. So on March third, voters from nine towns and cities will once again go to polls to cast their votes. It is expected that the deadline for nominations will be around mid-February since, by law, there is a twenty-day period prior to the election date within which nominations must be done.
Josephine Tamai, Chief Elections Officer"We are in the process of preparing for those municipal elections. It will be for all nine municipalities. As we speak, preparations are being made. We know with the challenges of COVID, again, we will put protocols in place in order for us to conduct the election. We need to look at the safety of public officers and the safety of voters as well, because that is also our number one priority. So we definitely will be having meetings again with the Ministry of Health in order to determine if there is any need for any change in regards to the process that we carried out before. We know that when it came to the protocols, we had strict protocols in place in terms of the voting process. So we intend to continue to maintain that and try to even do better this time around. When it comes to the date itself, we know that has been set so it is the third of March, 2021. When it comes to nomination day for municipal elections; again that is a date that the government will have to determine, but more than likely that will be just before the middle of February, which is not too far away."Deadline for Registering for Municipal Elections is January EleventhThe deadline to register in time for the municipal elections is January eleventh. Chief Elections Officer Josephine Tamai says that given the registration cycle, the approved list will include those registered up to that date. She encourages Belizeans to get registered, saying that COVID-19 safety protocols are being exercised at Elections and Boundaries offices across the country.
Josephine Tamai, Chief Elections Officer"Looking at the nomination day being by the second week in February, more than likely the deadline for persons to register to vote in the municipal elections will be the eleventh of January, 2021. So again, for persons who wish to vote in municipal elections, they are required to register by the eleventh of January, 2021. I want to encourage people who have not registered because we have a continuous registration system. So persons could always go in and register at the office but again depending on the nomination day that will determine whether they are eligible to vote. One of the things that we have been doing since early this year, persons who go to the Elections and Boundaries offices are required to use their masks. Persons will not be attended to if they are not properly wearing their masks; they are properly sanitized before entering the offices and we have persons who continuously clean the offices throughout the day to ensure that the staff is safe and to ensure that persons who go in to get registered are safe. We also manage the number of persons within the office space at any particular point in time. We ask persons to ensure that outside while they are waiting for them to maintain the six feet social distancing. In cases where it is difficult to manage, then we would ask the assistance of the police to ensure that persons are abiding by the protocols."Channel 5
