Today, 94,890 eligible voters will go to the polls to select municipal leaders in Belize's 7 towns and 2 cities.

They will select from a total of 160 candidates nominated to fill 67 seats which go up for election today.

The UDP and the PUP each have 67 candidates, while there are 12 independents, as well as 10 BPP candidates in PG and Belize City, 3 BPF candidates in Dangriga, and 1 "U-U-P" candidate in Dangriga.

Currently, the UDP controls 41 of 67 seats and 6 of 9 municipalities - gained in the 2018 election.

But, coming off a sweeping landslide victory in November's elections, conventional wisdom and historical trends indicate that the PUP should sweep, or virtually sweep the elections. If they fail to win a super majority those 9 municipalities, it would be considered a disappointment and a telling one.

San Pedranos to elect a new Town Council today

The 2021 municipal elections are underway in Belize, and electorates in San Pedro Town will cast their vote to elect a new town council. Polls opened at 7AM on the island with voting areas at the San Pedro High School and the Roman Catholic Primary School. The island is one of the most substantial municipalities in the country, with 7,983 registered voters.

The turnout was considerable during the first 35 minutes after polls opened, but the numbers quickly decreased. According to returning officer, Martin Alegria over 1,000 people voted by 9AM. Both candidates stated that the sudden decline in voters after 7AM is because today is not a holiday, and voters are at their respective workplaces. They expect another surge of voters by midday and late this evening.

Election Day March 2021 Downtown San Pedro Belize
Elections in Belize are fun and Festive events. Political songs sound like popular soca music and on Ambergris Caye flags are flying on golf carts. This video was taken on the edge of San Pedro town, I was walking to Tropic cargo, which is a stone's throw south.
