2023's San Pedro Lobsterfest is Almost Here!

San Pedro Lobsterfest is an annual event on Ambergris Caye - celebrating our island and celebrating the start of lobster season - in a very big way. The lobster season in Belize starts on July 1st (and closes on March 1st of the following year) so you will see lobster on almost every menu. Grilled lobster, lobster kabobs, lobster ceviche, lobster nuggets and more…

And it's 28 days away!

Officially, Lobster Festival in San Pedro starts Monday, July 3rd. Each day and night leading up to the BIG BLOCK PARTY is scheduled with an event. Sometimes something simple like a visit to a shop (usually with special snacks and sales) and sometimes something bigger like a Lobster Beach BBQ or All-You-Can-Eat Lobster extravaganza.

At each spot, you will get your Lobsterfest Passport stamped (you can only get it stamped at the event on the prescribed date). You can pick up a passport at your first event!

2023 San Pedro Lobsterfest Block Party Is The Best Ever

Although I think I say that every year. San Pedro, Belize 2023 Lobsterfest did not disappoint. Not one bit. In fact, there were more booths, more bands, more performers, and well…more lobsters than ever before. And I finally ate my first lobster of the season - in a dip, in a taco, and in some very tasty lobster corn dogs. The Saturday night block party is the culmination of a week+ long festival. Each day leading up to the big community party, there are two events at local businesses. And then everyone comes together to celebrate. Here are all the businesses that had booths in the football field.

We got there early - so I could take some pictures before the crowds arrived but by 5:30pm, people were already flowing in…and the music was playing. Everyone was fully set up and ready to go. Not like when I helped with a cupcake booth at the first lobster festival in 2007 - everybody was running late that year. LOVE the balloon entrance. He blew over just before we arrived but that was quickly remedied.

Lobster Lovers Unite and Delight

In case you din't know, July is one of the party months in celebration for the opening of the lobster season in Belize. After a long Lobster Crawl (Jul 3rd - 14th), July 15th was the big annual Lobster Festival Block Party. The event was held at the old football field, Saca Chispas (formally known as the Hon. Louis Sylvestre Sports Complex.) While generally this is the end of the festival, this year it finished with a Boca del Rio beach party on Sunday July 16th.

With a 5:00 pm start for the block party, the organizers and booths had time to set up - hopefully at a relaxed pace. The event slowly came to life and turned into a colorful, fun filled evening starting with a bright lobster balloon arch welcoming everyone into the festival grounds. We also got "VIP treatment" with an event wrist band upon entry. The night sparkled, and contented kids dotted the crowd enjoying their new toys - some chose light up swords over galaxy balls. But seriously, the San Pedro Lobster Festival Committee out did themselves this year, as did many of the booths. The sponsors also deserve a hand for all of their support, as well as the MC's, and performers. And let's not forget the hundreds of lobster lovers from near and far, that came out in support of this delicious and entertaining annual event.

The machinery behind a successful San Pedro Lobsterfest

The 2023 San Pedro Lobster Festival was another successful event that saw thousands of islanders and tourists flocking to the Honourable Louis Sylvestre (Saca Chispas field) during its block party on July 15th. The annual festival honors the opening of the lobster season and provides a spike in the island's economy during a period considered the starting of the low tourism season. As the popular festival nears two decades since its debut in June 2007, here is a peek into the process of organizing one of the largest events in the country that continues to grow year after year.

The lobster activities did not disappoint this year as the celebration showcased the best in lobster dishes, colorful and creative restaurant booths, and live music. The number of persons recorded attending is estimated to have surpassed 5,000 after 4,000 wristbands were distributed at the venue's entrance. In keeping the annual festival affordable for the businesses paying for the booths, support from stakeholders and the community is imperative. The organizers consist of a small staff and primarily volunteers. Arceo wants to make a special thanks to Coqui Alamilla, who organizes the passport and manages finances, Renita Dellaca collects thousands of dollars in prizes and donates endless hours of her time, Judith Azueta and Amanda Syme coordinate the social media and the crawl crew while Daisy Martinez, Laisha Gamez, Evianny Ancona and Kayla Ruano are recognized for attending all the events. This represents a heavy workload in organizing the activities, but Arceo said it is worth it as it benefits the island community. The organizing group led by Arceo added that the event is non-profit but San Pedro benefits from the tourist attraction. "The feedback has been excellent, with people telling us that it is the most organized, professional, and successful lobster festival to date. It's been 16 years, and I have watched the festival grow. Every year we learn something different as the festival continues to expand and develop into something we are all very proud of," said Arceo. She said the community's support, cooperation, and enthusiasm have been fantastic, with everyone working together and representing San Pedro well. "The hard work and dedication of the San Pedro business community make San Pedro Lobster Fest the success it is," Arceo said.
