There was a butane explosion in downtown Belize City today - and it left two women with burn injuries. It happened at Fish and Chip's food stall in the Battlefield park. Around 10:45 AM personnel from a butane company was filing the stall's tank while one of the cooks attempted to check the stove by igniting a spark. That caused an immediate flash of fire and an explosion.
But the chaos didn't stop there because - according to police - when the butane delivery man attempted to loosen the gas hose from the fryer, the result was an even larger flame. He eventually extinguished it but only by turning off the outside gas valve.
Fire personnel would later discover that a hose to the tank was leaking and not properly clamped down.
The explosion injured the food stall's cooks 40-year-old Danica Rowland and her younger sister 30-year-old Shantel Andrew, both of whom sustained burns to their hands and feet. They drove themselves to the hospital where we are told Rowland remains tonight.
We tried to get comment from the owner but she didn't want to go on camera.
