That same day Colin formed off the coast of South Carolina and caused only minimal damage to the Carolinas leading to one death. No tropical cyclones formed in the month of August for the first time since 1997.
After only three short-lived tropical storms have formed, beginning July 2, the tropical cyclogenesis was suppressed along the basin for approximately two months by a combination of strong intersting winds and a I'll go dry, plus the presence of dust layer from the Sahara and as a result, no tropical cyclones formed in August for the first time since 1997. With Bonnie and Julia crossing into the Pacific, the season became the first since 1996 that two cyclones survive the Atlantic to the Pacific.
