Hi all! I'm reading the several messages about pros and cons of staying in North, South or Downtown AC and I am clearing up more and more about it.
But... what about GRASS near the beach, coral reef and water?
I heard that grass in the water and on the beach is sometimes a problem...
Can anyone tell me more about it?
Thanks

Eel grass and other seagrass is not a "problem." It is part of the amazing cycle of life, a component of the ecology of the Belize barrier reef and shore. Without the barrier reef, which slows the wave energy that over long periods creates wide sandy beaches, Belize would have the kind of beaches you find around many Caribbean islands -- nice for human swimming but with only a limited amount of sea life. With the barrier reef, a kind of rain forest under the sea, Belize has an amazing variety of sea life (not to mention a natural protection against storm surges).

As a practical matter, most hotels and resorts do remove sea grass from an area at the end of their pier or elsewhere to provide a grass-free area to swim. This is true north, south and in between. Hotels also regularly rake their beaches to eliminate grass that has washed up on shore.

Sometimes after high water you will defintitely get turtle grass on the beach, make no mistake. But one of the most treasured abilities of a San Pedrano is a well-raked and clean beach. It even featured as the admirable characteristic of one who dearly departed. We live north and enjoy a clean foreshore and wading area, descending to some grass and then deep (waist high) coral. Only a casual snorkel presents lucky to be alive lobsters, starfish, conch, small western stingray, bonefish, snapper and on and on. it may feel funny underfoot but it's no discomfort when this is in front of you bedroom.
