The Statistical Institute of Belize has published preliminary findings on the country's first Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) study.
This research was conducted as part of the September 2021 Labour Force Survey with technical and financial support from UNICEF Belize, UNDP Belize, the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative, and the Caribbean Development Bank.
Traditionally, poverty has been measured in terms of money; however, the MPI enhances this by using 17 dimensions to provide greater insights by expanding the narrow focus of finances alone. These dimensions measure poverty as an accumulation of deprivations to give a deeper understanding of the well-being of Belizean households in the areas of health, education, employment, and living standards.
