A new King of England, Charles the third, will be crowned on Saturday At Westminster Abbey in London. Charles will also be the King of Belize.
But, is it time for Belize to ditch the King as our head of state, and is there a public appetite for that?
Well, a poll recently conducted in Belize and across the Commonwealth by Michael Ashcroft's pollsters found that many countries don't want to become a republic; they want the British monarch to remain as their head of state.
The poll found that 48% of Belizeans said they would vote to keep the monarchy in a referendum tomorrow, while 43% would vote to become a republic. 9% said they didn't know or would not vote.
Of those voting to stay with the Crown, 71% said the monarchy was a good thing; while the remainder said that the alternative they ended up with would probably be worse or that the process of switching over would be too disruptive.
Notably, of those voting to become a republic, 86% of them said they had been happy to continue with the monarchy under Queen Elizabeth, but now it was time for change.
And, perhaps the most interesting outcome of the poll is that by a margin of just 51% to 49%, Belizeans said they thought the King and the royal family actually care a lot about Belize. And (get this) by the same margin, they said the royal family did a better job of connecting with ordinary people than elected politicians. Says a whole lot for the PUDP's common touch.
The poll reached out to 510 adults in Belize between February and March of this year.
