CAYE CAULKER UPDATE

The streets are filled with mud and debris. Light poles and cables
lying everywhere.

BEL electric plant totally destroyed, covered by sea water during
storm. Will take 3 months to get electricity back to island rumor is.
Portable generators are needed on Caye Caulker immediately and fuel
supplies, floodlights, etc.

Dredge submerged.

School Roof gone.

Half of Dalia's house is gone.

Marla's house is gone.

B. Rodgriguez half roof gone, house water soaked.

Ilna Auxillou roof totally gone, house completely soaked, inside ruined.

Wendy de la Fuente, partial roof gone, house shaky needs reinforcing.

Diane and Tina partial roofs gone.

Ivan Alamina house destroyed.

Dora and Raleigh Marins House gone.

Hotel and houses by Mexicano on East side gone, near Paradise .

Puchi's house by the split gone.

Rogi Saldivar house is gone.

Most water taxis have been totalled and destroyed. There is a
hurricane hole in the mangroves in the back bay on the West side. Most
parked them in there and tied to the trees. The storm surge and wind
came from that side and piled them up and ground them into kindling,
motors and all.

Rico Novelo lost his two boats.

Reuben Alamina two water taxies destroyed.

NARROW ESCAPE - one infant was swept away by storm surge waves and the
young mother caught the infant on the back flow. Baby was saved.

BTL equipment trailer and construction site for new tower is gone.
Trailer smashed by tree, or pole or something like that.

20 houses is the re-estimate of total number of families now destitute.

On the bright side, the front beach reclamation project still looks
good, they say.

CAYE CHAPEL

The new sea wall is gone, the new airstrip destroyed.

AMBERGRIS CAYE

Ambergris Caye, the north section, west side. Only rumors coming out,
but rumor seems to indicate 15 bodies definitely identified and rumor
indicates possibly another hundred missing. There has been no secondary
confirmation on this report.
---------------------------------------------------------------

NEEDED:

Emergency portable generators, some sort of hand held communications,
cellular with no fees for duration of emergency by BTL.

They speak of the FOG OF WAR, that is what we have after any disaster,
is a fog of lack of communications. Communications is sporadic out of
San Pedro and nil out of northern Ambergris Caye. Communications out of
Caye Caulker is basically nil also, though we are getting the odd item,
but not any kind of complete picture yet.

Thanks for this info. Is there any news of St George's Caye which must have been similarly hit? Any information very gratefully received.

Rick and Cheri:

If you pull off this relief effort, please contact me with complete information. My next book is going to be the Saltwater Angler's Guide to Central America and the Yucatan, and I want to get the entire story into the Belize chapter. The book is being published by Wilderness Adventures Press; www.wildadv.com.

I would love to have photos of the entire operation, if possible. I will pay for all shipping, etc., and return the originals to you.

This is an important thing to have in the book, as it shows my readers what the people of Belize are all about.

Hang Tough,

Bob
