I am planning a family holiday for myself, husband and 3 teens. I have narrowed it down to staying at either, Xanadu Island Resort or Captain Morgan's. I have never been and was wondering if anyone could tell me what they thought of these spots. Also what it the distance from San Pedro. I have heard they are short walks.......true or false. Thanks kindly.

Neither one is a short walk. Captain Morgans is north of the cut and Xanadu is south of town about a mile and a half.

Xanadu is a pleasant 15-ish minute walk to town along the beach (under a mile distance) - close enough to enjoy town, but far enough away from the noise. It is a really nice small resort, quiet, new pool, well built condos, great beach, owners live on the property and are involved in day to day operations. They will recommend guides and tours for you and book them. They have bikes available also (free?). There have been some good reports recently on the message board from families that stayed there. Cpt. Morgan's is a very nice resort also - it is north of the river cut, so travel to town is further and more involved. Between the two, I would recommend Xanadu for its easy access to town and other island spots.

I stayed at Xanadu in November with my husband and two kids (10 and 7). It was a great place for us - nice and roomy and right on the beach. When we went to town, we caught a taxi ($5.00 US round trip) instead of walking. To be honest, we only went into San Pedro town twice in 5 days. We had everything we wanted within easy walking distance of Xanadu - a convenience store to buy food for the fridge, several restaraunts, and a dive shop. Plus, the kids were having so much fun playing on the beach and in the pool, it was hard to drag them away.

I think Xanadu is excellent for families. Very nice condos (though a bit strange looking from the outside.) If you want something with larger units, to handle three teens, you might also look at Banyan Bay. The units there are two-bedroom, two bath plus a sofa in the living area, and they are large, over a 1000 square feet.

Thanks to everyone for their input. Sounds like Xanadu is the best location for us, especally the teens. Use of the bikes. kayaks, and canoes.......I'm sure these will be put to use!
Lan SLuder, I'm curious what you mean about the look of the outside.......is it the roofs?
Thanks again,
River.

Before you book anywhere, be sure to check out The Palms... It's a one minute walk to town, next door to Ramon's and is a GREAT place... I'm not affiliated with The Palms but have stayed there twice and it meets all the needs of a family. A short walk to the market, too. The top floor has a great 2 bedroom apartment with the second bedroom upstairs for privacy in the master bedroom. The balcony has a GREAT view and you can save money by having breakfast and lunch at home, then splurging for dinner! See their website...
