I never had any flashlights lighting my way down the beach in 99 either.

I distinctly recall one night, a few of us laying down and making sand angels. Then just sitting there, naively being eaten by the sandfleas. Seemed like such a good idea at the time.

Eventually, a couple of locals (of my most recent acquaintance) came along and were insisting that I join them for some dancing somewhere. I wasn't inclined to go . . .a few tense moments there but no real fight broke out between my guys and the locals. And with all that, sand angels, yakking loudly, insistances, sandflea bites, etc., not one security guard or policeman came by or flashlighted us. Not even the guard looking after the property we were sitting in front of.

Personally in June 99 and Feb. 00, I saw more security/guards, and felt safer, than I did in Dec. 00/Jan.01.

well WW - what can I say... or what do I care to say, except I have been going there a helluva lot longer than '99 and have NEVER seen anything like you describe. And trust me, I walked & stopped ALL along the beaches - day , night & in between - alone, mostly, and NEVER had a problem..nor did I see lots of "guards' save for the locals hired to hang out on the beach in front of the hotels.

Maybe it's my angelic disposition & looks

We stayed at budget places, so our experiences would be different than at more upscale places, where there are security guards, etc. So, in a BUDGET place, I would not leave any valuables in the room at any time. Always lock the door if you have valuables inside. Don't sleep with the door unlocked or open, even for ventilation purposes. You CAN be ripped off. Wouldn't walk on the beach at night except with a group of four or more. Again, these don't seem like extraordinary precautions; certainly no different than what I would do in the US. People think that AC is so mellow and laid back, that they forget these common sense precautions. laugh

Geez, Trina, you wouldn't walk on the beach with fewer than 3 other people? That's a shame. You've really missed out, in my opinion.

Sure we need to be careful but don't let caution or fear stop you from experiencing the ambiance that can be the beach or the docks of SP at night.

Almost every night before I go to bed, I sit, star-gazing, on a dock or beach picnic table, alone or with friend(s). I've only once had a problem and that was at a picnic table by the highschool, where I'd been sitting watching the sunrise on New Year's Day. Even that experience was more annoying than it was threatening. I'm not necessarily recommending my own actions, I'm just saying I've really had no problems in this regard.

And klcman . . . angelic? Were you making sand angels too? hee hee

Seashell, yeah I guessed I missed out. Here's why: I walked on the main street after dark in a large crowd on AC, and some man grabbed me in a NOT pleasant way, in a private area of my body. So THEREFORE, that led me to not feel very comfortable walking in a too small group after dark on the beach.

there is no place that is totally safe....as others have said on this post, you just have to take normal precautions, as you would anywhere....don't put yourself in situations that are uncomfortable....and if you find yourself in that place.....hold your head up, walk with confidence....make eye contact, say "hey how ya doing" and keep walking....someone that is out to hurt someone, is going to think twice about going after a confident person, than someone who shows fear....it's the same rule to follow anywhere..... wink

well if indeed we are dealing with mr. multi personality, we have the last laugh because he needs to get a life. eek maybe even a job because you can't have that much free time on your hands if you are having any fun in your life.
at least this personality isn't insulting. wish we could lock him in a box with a green crayon.
