On the other hand, Half Moon Caye is almost worth the trip all by itself. The whole trip is worth the time, effort and money, in my opinion.
Been there, done that, the washing machine ate the T-shirt

We just came back from Ambergris and took Amigos Del Mar out to the Blue Hole. 4 divers and 2 snorkelers in our group. 2-1/2 hour boat ride one way, very rough over the open water sections. Speaking as one of the snorkelers, I would pass on this trip again. There is a reef, but absolutely nothing to see. Very few fish. Some nice coral, but so not worth that monster boat ride. Would recommend other closer snorkel trips.

Thanks for everyone's help with the Blue Hole. That was the reason I was interested in Belize in the first place, but it feels like we made a great choice in going to Belize whether we actually make it out there or not.
Barbara, we're staying at Caribe Island and we're not planning any time on the mainland. I hate bugs, didn't want to take the malaria rx and we are really water folks so that's what made sense. One week is limiting as well.

How about snorkeling local sites. Then since the Blue Hole is of great interest to your family, do a fly over tour.

Do you have information on a fly-over tour? Sounds interesting (but expensive!)

I know Tropic Air does it. Used to be $99 pp - not sure what it is now but I will see what I can find out.

One suggestion: Since the 15 year old is legally blind, I would avoid snorkeling at Tres Coco. It is very shallow, with some current, and navigating around the coral formations will be very difficult for him. Go and live the dream!

Goin Belize... you would have spent more than $400 for the snorkle to the Blue Hole. Amigos charges $120 pp for snorkelers... it's true what Cruisn' Tigger said... not much to see topside, and as one of the diver's on the same trip, not that much to see at 135 feet either! It's more for the experience and the geological wonder over marine life. I think the other 2 sites that day were better for snorkeling, but again, you have to endure the long boat ride.
I'm in agreement w/other posters... there's lots of local sites on the reef to keep you fascinated for weeks!
