I see from an earlier post Capt Morgan's is under construction. Are there other resorts in the area that have Cabanas / Casitas that are of comparable quality?

Also, what's the weather generally like in early Sept (visiting in the first week)?

A friend of mine stayed at Capt Morgans the last two weeks of August last year and described the weather as "perfect."

As for the construction, I was there a month ago and all the construction was on the very south end of their property. All their cabanas are on the north end of their property, so if you are looking to stay in a cabana the construction should not be an issue.

As for other places in the area w/cabanas, Mata Chica is the only other place up north that I am aware of. I hear there cabanas are real nice. Mata Chica is about a mile or two north of Captain Morgans.

JUST GOT BACK FROM AC TWO WEEKS AGO AND STAYED AT VICTORIA HOUSE. WE LOOKED AT CAPT. MORGANS AND A FEW OTHERS THAT OFFERED CASITAS AND SETTLED ON VICTORIA HOUSE. WHILE THERE WE TOOK THE TIME TO SEE FOR OURSELVES FIRST HAND THESE OTHER PROPERTIES. THERE IS NO COMPARISON TO VICTORIA HOUSE. THE GROUNDS ARE LUSH AND GREEN AND METICULOUSLY KEPT. IT HAS ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BEACH AREAS WE SAW ON THE ISLAND AND A FANTASTIC POOL. WHILE THE PRICE MIGHT BE A LITTLE HIGHER THAN OTHERS YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. VICTORIA HOUSE IS OF COURSE SOUTH OF S.P. BUT ONLY 2 MILES FROM TOWN. THE BIKES ARE FREE AND THEY RUN A FREE SHUTTLE EVERY 2 HOURS INTO TOWN AND BACK. WE STAYED IN THE RAINFOREST SUITE AND I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW GREAT IT WAS. WE OPENED UP ALL THE FRENCH DOORS TO THE DECK AND PUT SOME MUSIC ON THE C.D. PLAYER AND JUST VEGGED OUT . IT WAS WITHOUT A DOUBT THE MOST RELAXING VACATION I HAVE EVER BEEN ON.
GOOD LUCK.

Portofino also has cabanas and is up north like Cap't Morgans. Capricorn also has 3 cabanas and is right next door to CM. Great restaurant but not as full service (no pool, etc) as CM.

If you're looking for thatch cabanas on Ambergris Caye, your choices are:

Captain Morgan's
Portofino
Mata Chica
Hotel del Rio
Ramon's
Victoria House (some units)
Xanadu (not your traditional thatch construction, though!)
Exotic Caye/Playador
Salamander

Hope I didn't overlook any.

A few other places such as Capricorn have cabins/casitas (not thatch).

Personally, I think the cabins and cabanas are over-rated. Give me a beautiful new reinforced concrete villa or condo anyday. Quieter, cooler (ever tried to A/C thatch?), fewer bugs, newer and nicer.

I liked the Xanadu's version of a thatched roof.
Concrete geodesic domes with a thatched shelter over. Cool, ventillated, good AC, no bugs or critters.

Sorry, Gaz, I did forget your thatch units ... and I saw them just a few days ago, when I was staying at Mata Chica.
