I'll throw a new name out there, I went to Amigos Del Mar & asked my good friend Changa(owner) to hook me up with a good guide for a half day fishing trip,He said his older brother Tomas Paz was his best for fly fishing, being I haven't fished in 20 yrs. I went reef fishing with Tomas, we went out about 5 miles on the other side past Cayo Espanto,he was very patient & we moved around alot,he hooked me up with 29 snapper & 1 nice grouper,he told me he prefers fly fishing.
Bottom line, I had a great time & if he's that much better at fly fishing I would think he would be a very good guide for fly fishing.

Hey Obtuse: be great to get a FF report on your return. Board gets alot of spin/reef reports, but few from experienced flyfisherman. I'm down 3/10 with 6 days booked and am esp. interested in whether the tarpon on Savannah flats are eating.

I've booked a flyfishing day for my husband and friend with Luis Caliz for March 4. I hope I did the right thing. We've heard good things. We'll be in San Pedro March 2 - 8. If you see a guy riding around on his bicycle looking for places to pull off and fly fish, that will be George. He's determined to see the island and do some fishing on his own. If I think he's too worn out after a couple days, I'm going to book him some more fishing trips with a guide!!!!

I'm sure Geo. will be pleased. Wish I was down when he is. Although I've fished the island for 5 or 6 years, it's always been with a guide. This year I've committed 2 days to the DYI walk along the beaches. One day north and one day south. Been nice to have had some company. Anyone else out there that looking to flyfish the beaches 3/14 or 3/15? Early am.

I've used Luis Caliz for years, and he's great!! He knows the fish there better than almost anyone, and he's one of the most friendly and enthusiastic people you'll meet down there. Go for it!

krehfish,

Just got back from AC. The wind was unrelenting, which made casting a bit tough. It's early for tarpon, but it was nonstop bonefish action on the flats. Schools of fish were plentiful and the average size was 1-2lb. These fish were not anywhere near as finicky or spooky as the bones in the FL keys. I landed a couple of dozen in a day of fishing. My guide, Severo Guerrero has great eyes and got me within casting distance over and over again. I highly recommend him. He told me he was fully booked through the middle of March and I can see why. he has a loyal following. FYI he has two boats, a flats skiff and a more substantial boat for trolling the reef.

Obtuse: Thanx,March and wind have a way of going together. Where'd you fish tarpon? I'm hoping they're at Savannah, but they do have a reputation for not eating. Did you at least see numbers of tarpon?

krehfish,

I saw three or four tarpon rolling, but I never got close enough to throw anything at them. I was focusing on the bonefish this trip.

Obtuse: That's not encouraging. Used to seeing 30-40 a day with shots at about half. Wind will do crazy things though. I'll get back to you after the 20th. Hope I make you cry(grin).
