We're deciding between Mata Chica and Ramon's for our honeymoon. Obviously Ramon's is more appealing for its proximity to town and restaurants, and Mata Chica is more appealing for the quiet. We're going in October. Is that off-season enough for us to have some feeling of privacy at Ramon's (we'd be staying in a honeymoon suite)? We're really hoping to stay in a stand-alone beach cabana.

I've read a lot of posts about Ramon's not being worth the money, but no one has said that about Mata Chica. Since MC is more, is it safe to assume that the minor price difference is far surpassed by the quality?

Also, does anyone know what restaurants are near Mata Chica and how far they are? Is there anything in the $5-15 range? Thanks.

And unfortunately, both Victoria House and Capricorn are closed at that time.

October is very, very quiet. You may want to go with Mata Chica, especially since it will be boring in town anyway.
Mata Chica is much nicer, both the beach cabannas and the beach itself. I had no idea there is not much of a price difference, there should be. I guess that's because Mata Chica is far from town.

There are several choices of restaurants around Mata Chica, but all upscale and more in the $25 to $50 range. If that is an issue, you better stay at Ramon's, and have a choice of local places in town.

and also remember that when staying north of the cut you will either have to walk into town and take the hand ferry or take a water taxi at $5 a pop

We were just there and stayed at another resort that is not quite as far north as Mata Chica. The water taxi might be an expense ($5US per person 1 way unless your hotel has a different offer), and can be a timing issue. They might be able to tell you how often the ferry will run in Oct, so that you'll know how easy it will be to get into town. You might think about how much time you like to spend lounging around a resort or going on excursions, and how much time you like to spend seeing the day-to-day life of the area. We went into town every day and often twice a day to try a new restaurant, listen to music, try karaoke, etc., so the distance could be daunting. Here's a total girl tip: if you're taking the ferry, bring a hooded jacket or a hair clip, and a brush. I'm not overly concerned with my hair (don't even own hairspray), but even I would rather not sit down to a nice dinner with wind-blown knots. :-) Congratulations, and have a wonderful honeymoon!

We stayed at Ramon's last Jan and really liked the proximity to San Pedro. They toook very good care of us and run an excellent dive/snorkle operation. I'll be diving with Turanio again when we return in 2 weeks. If you are on a budget look at the Mayan Princes. The rooms are about the same price but they have a small kitchen where you can have breakfast or lunch. Eating in San Pedro can get a little expensive if your not careful. If you don't already dive you might consider getting certified. It is a great sport and an awsome location.

Thanks. I hadn't thought about that town would be dead anyway. And thanks for the hair tip. No one likes tangles (I don't own hairspray either.) Is there anything to do at night that far north--bars with bands, or even just a bar with more than 1 other person in it? We're not too picky, we will be on our honeymoon anyway.
