A question that's not covered in our Belize travel books is how much can we bring in. Two Bottles of our favorite Vino since we're celebrating our 30th. Then we'd like to bring some Tequilla & Controy from Mexico. Is that allowed? I can't find it anywhere.

You can buy all of those beverages here. Why not support the local economy.
The Wine de Vine store in town have a huge selection of wines from all over the world - and well priced.
You can buy the Mexican liquor at most large grocery stores here.
I can't remember how much booze you can import duty free, but it is the same as the US. Maybe 2 quarts per family???

Our wines is 1975 (30) years for our 30th. It's in our wine cooler. Remember it's our 30th. Yes, I'll support the local trade with the other - no biggie. I doubt they would have our favorite Cab's.If I manage to pass the certification, we can celebrate. I think I'm too old for this - there is a lot to learn - will my brain work overtime??

I bring wine in every time, mostly to share with friends who live on the island. I generally pack no more than 6 bottles (big bubble wrap, dish towels, oversize ziploc bag) and have never had a problem. Wine De Vine does have a great selection but know that you'll pay quite a bit more for them due to taxes and the cost of importing. Last I looked, there weren't any California wines and I'm a big Zin drinker Good luck and pack carefully!

Wine is expensive in Belize.
A $15 box of Almaden in CT was $50 last February. Plan accordingly.
Beer is great!

If you're a serious wine drinker, bring your own. Prices are almost double what you'll pay in the states and selection of decent wine is limited. That said, Belikin is part of the Belize experience and the rum punch is excellent!

They keep telling me on those Customs forms and I keep forgetting.
Coincidence? I think not...

I believe the legal, duty free amount is 2 bottles per family.
I mainly drink californian wines. $330 Bz for a case. That is $27.50 Bz per bottle. So $13.75 US for a $9 US bottle of wine. If you call that expensive - drink beer.
My POINT was, support the local Belizean economy. If stuff elsewhere is so great and CHEAP - why visit Belize?
Oh right, because you love the people - then help support our economy. How do you think locals live?
Most of the difference in cost is government taxes - the government pays for the majority of the schools in this country. Don't you love our beautiful children with their happy smiling faces?
I realize this point is lost a few select people - the type of folks that demand 20% discounts on tours and hotel rooms.

My apologies for ranting - don't get too offended.
You can buy wonderful wines here, from California, France, Australia, Chile etc.
Yes they cost a little more than you may be accostomed to at home - but your on vacation - and your anniversary celebration - take the plunge and try something new. You just might like it.

I am a huge wine fan (lived in Napa Valley area for years). I always bring 2 bottles with me and of course, my bottle of Jose Cuervo.
Enjoy your trip!

Did you watch the movie Sideways? It was about the California Wine Country. I thought it was kinda crappy - a load of hype and then no delivery.

Simon & I are just gonna have to agree to disagree on this one. When I said "the selection of decent wine is limited" what I should have said was the selection of decent CALIFORNIA wine is limited. There are no Cal wines on that list that I would purchase - either here or in Belize. In terms of expense - I wouldn't drink a $9 bottle of wine. If that makes me a snob, I'm willing to wear the label in this area. I'm partial to good CA wines and don't think Austrailian or Chilean wines compare. As an example of the price differences: Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, Napa Valley, 1998 - that's $70 to $80 US and $176 on Simon's list. I understand the costs are related to taxes and shipping and that doesn't bother me - I just don't find the selection very extensive. I'm also not convinced by Amanda's argument that my purchasing wine in Belize supports the locals. Certainly not to the extent the amount of Belikin and rum I purchased did! I stand by my original statement - if you're really into wine you know what you like so bring a couple of bottles. But don't forget to try what the local area has to offer - wine's not their deal but they make a fun beer and the rum punch can't be beat! P.S. who gets 20% discounts on their hotel rooms

klcman, I did say more are available! If you want it you got it. I do know that it brings back some nostalgia for some people (Baby Duck was my intro to wine), maybe I should carry it for a treat ;-)
mobunny, 14 minutes by my watch.
2miles, thank god for cut and paste.
Amanda, no problemo
law, California makes good wine? Just shows what I know, especially on price. When I go to WDV I usually grab something in the $20-$40US range and assume it's good, probably not the best method but hey I'm British/Canadian what do I know about wine. You're right about the beer, I'm British/Canadian so I do know beer (lots). You pay for hotel rooms?

Ah Simon - at least we agree on lots of other stuff! Of course we pay for hotel rooms! Banana Beach & the gang there is one of the best parts about our visits - but, hey - maybe next time we can crash w/ you? Don't forget the Cisco, Night Train, Thunderbird and Wild Irish Rose! P.S. - where's our SAGA update?

I do have a King!
A Saga update is coming soon, we've been sidetracked by other issues. We just signed a short term lease on the temporary clinic. It's on the lower level of the old San Pedro Sun building. We're hoping to have the new vet down before December and will start a big fund raising push at that time.
Never did any of the above vintages but I did have an affair with Southern Comfort in High School.

I'm sure the four of us could be very comfy! re: SAGA - Keep us posted, please. I'd be interested in talking further about tracking down the large donation. Everybody needs Comfort in high school

Yes, we saw that about classical music, too. We play the radio to our grapes (seriously). The noise keeps the birds away, at least we like to think it does sometimes. Maybe we ought to switch to the classical station, though...

One of our clients brought us a fine California Wine - $1.97 a bottle. Hey I'm not a wine snob - I know what I like, that fits into the entertainment budget - and I enjoy it. But a good rum punch and a few cold, cold belikins has it's place in life too

Simon - which old San Pedro Sun building? Hopefully the one across the street from the Island Academy. I was just driving along the road this morning wracking (sp) my brain trying to think of a temp site for the clinic.
I adopted a new pot licker yesterday and was ever so grateful that the Saga clinic and Dr. Sheila were here to give her the once over and some shots.
Saga needs to establish its permanent home sooner than later - temporary situations cost more money. So everybody start thinking about digging into the pockets for our animals too.
BTW Lawcucui - there is a San Pedro Wine Club - don't attend it myself but I have heard it is good for some great wines, great food and lots of laughs once a month.

Amanda, correct, right across from the south entrance to Island Academy.
That's a thought on the wine club functions, they should be posted here when they come up.

I thought I would add my two cents here. First, Lagniappe Provisioning is a wonderful service - Simon has a huge selection of everything. He's quite accommodating Secondly, I went to go find a nice bottle of wine to bring to someone's house as a host gift while I was on AC in August. I first went to Wine Devine - they had a wonderful selection of wines from all over the world - some I love - very pricey for my occasion and yes there was NO California wines there. I asked specifically. Then Steve from Coconets told me to go the wine and spirit shop down the street a ways. Tulu's Daughter works there. I found my California wine that I knew was good and it was maybe 20% more than what I pay in California. And, that wine was not available on Simon's list. I'm not a wine snob - I can drink just about anything. But I now know that what ever it is I want, I can find it on AC and rather than lug it with me (back problems), I will happily support the local community when I'm there.

...a drive by whinnying... Gela, I believe you are referring to Premium Wine and Spirits in the new(ish) shops aside The Aqua Marine. They have a very good selection. Before they opened about a year ago, I used to have them send me over cases of wine from their warehouse in Belize City.

That bottle must have been a special for them or a new item. I just received their updated list along with WDV's so it should be posted in a couple of weeks when I do a renovation on the order form. The 2 stores compliment each other nicely with little product crossover.

Wine De Vine does have a great selection but know that you'll pay quite a bit more for them due to taxes and the cost of importing. Last I looked, there weren't any California wines and I'm a big Zin drinker
Good luck and pack carefully! Looked over the wine list at the local place - it's not a great list esp Calif. wise. We're extremely picky esp. since we've friends who are winemakers.

We collect old and rare vintage French champagnes. We're toured the region & have our selective favorites. Thanks for your posts - sure we'll fine something to please our palates.

P.S. who gets 20% discounts on their hotel
rooms I have to agree the pricies are very high esp. when we go to our local Costco buying some of these wines for very good discounted prices w/exception of a few. Wish our friend who is a winemaker could ship us a case - ha! customs would get us - we'll bring in our two and drink the run punch. I do like the Chilean wines.

If only Trader Joe's or Costco would venture into unknown places like the Caye - Costco had some dynamite Italian wines like Montipucano (misp) which is a favorite - it's the one Italian wine that I do know. The Trimbach Riesling is the only French Riesling I'm familar with surprising their are no Alsatian wines except for this Riesling. We've toured this area exclusively - love their wines esp. Gustuz Lorentz & Marcell Deiss.

SOUNDS LIKE TAKING SAND TO THE BEACH! Move over California - Oregon is now growing GREAT Pinot Noir! Look how long it took for wine snobs to even discover California wines. Remember when the 'only good wines' were from France. Didn't I see Inglenook on the list? That used to be in Napa Valley; did they move? Venture out - and remember - "If you drink a lot of wine you drink a lot."

There are a few of our Calif. winemakers who have relocated or else bought acres for grapes - I was amazed that this area is rapidly growing. Oregon makes some great Pinot Noir's. There's even vineyards in New Mexico.

And we even have wineries in Arizona! California, Oregon or Arizona, I just prefer wines that are not mast produced and rather prefer smaller vintages.

Well, try some of the Belizean Wines in that case, grown just outside of Burrel Boom. Rendezvous Restaurant also produces some of their own wines as well.

Wow! All of this 'cause Tweadybear wanted to know about bringing in a couple bottles of 30 year old wine for their 30th anniversary---have a heart guys and cut 'em some slack! They deserve to be able to bring in some special wines and Amanda a couple bottles isn't going to kill the economy, they are here eating, drinking, and lodging...wassup with that? It ain't exactly chickenfeed for a few lousy bottles of wine. There I have gotten myself in trouble again, but I have said my peace! Amen John in Denver P.S. I don't bring anything into the country except money and when I leave...most if not all of it is gone, and my credit cards are happy, and I am too!!

I bring in a couple of bottles of fine California wine every time I come, and you would be amazed how many Belizeans enjoy them with me....without a thought about the wine de vine shop! Wine de vine does not carry the california white wines I like.........and they fit in my suitcase just fine.

Amanda,
I saw the movie "Sideways."
3 times so far.
I agree with you 100%, you do think it's crappy.
Regarding schools. Govt pays around 1/2 the expenses of the Roman Catholic primary school, the R.C. church pays the other half. The school has seen very little improvment or expansion in the past 15 years despite the population of the island going up by 500% or more in that time. I remember my daughter Gina attending the R.C. school 15 years ago and it was overcrowded then. And there were no private island school alternatives in those days.
The other primary schools here on the island are privately owned and run and all offer good education at a reasonable price...some less expensive than others but all very cheap considering the long-term investment being made by parents. Thank goodness for them otherwise we'd probably be looking at 400 children MORE with no chance of a basic primary education.
Not sure what percentage of the San Pedro High School the government pays for. The new "South Park" High School at the Medical School building is 100% privately owned and run.
Have I gone off topic here? Something about wine, right?
Yes, I do like wine.

Sideways wasn't about California wine...it was about drunks.... we're talking about 2 bottles of wine...and by the way I didn't see Renaisssance vineyards or J. Lohr on Simonb's list....I live in California....no Husch....but you can't carry it all........so relax...let them bring in their own wine and quit putting a guilt trip on them like they are keeping the children from an education.......that's bulll...you know the parents pay for the education in reality....the govenrment does the bare minimum....ask a local! Let these people bring in their wine and quit it!

Hey, nobody said they CAN'T bring in their wine. They posted a message on the board - duh - that means they wanted to hear people's opinions. As always, the opinions are all over the place.
The only thing we seem to agree on is that the movie Sideways sucked.
Maybe I should watch it one more time and see if there is a hidden message. If is only about drunks I guess I can do my own research right here in San Pedro Town.
Maybe the Wine DeVine club could make a movie - wining & dining on Ambergris Caye - we could lobby to have it broadcast on MTV - and a different board member could "guest star" on each episode so that the world could hear our opinions on the missing tapes and yellow legal pad controversy.
I know tuition payments at the high school are much higher than at the Primary school. I think this is to help cover the computer and science lab costs. My eldest attends high school in Belize City and the GOB pays $50 Bz per student per month, so long as the child maintains a passing grade (70%) the parents pay an additional $30 per month.

clover, Sideways wasn't about drunks, it was about 2 men undergoing comic crisis in their love-lifes.
Amanda, I thought Sideways was (and is) brilliant.

I've decided to watch the movie again - but this time under the influence of alcohol. Hopefully it will improve.

What, no NY State Finger Lakes wines? Just kidding! But there are some very good ones as I have been finding out since relocating.

Although wine is relatively expensive in Belize and on the island, there are some shops selling good wines at fairly moderate prices. For US$14 I can get an excellent wine that would cost about half in the UK. More but not impossibly so.
