Rio Grande Valley in south Texas is laid back, across the river is Mexico. Head east 25 miles or less to South Padre Island on the Gulf of Mexico. People are the greatest, to me much like Ambergris. Real Estate inland is reasonable, on the beach of course is high, much like the prices on Ambergris.
I could live anywhere at this point in time, but the Valley suits me and has for many years. May have to relocate to San Antonio in a few years, for my kids to take care of me.
Weather is warm to hot gulf breezes to keep us cool.
Valley towns, McAllen, Harlingen, Brownsville and South Padre Island, with many smaller towns in between.
Not the best place to find employment tho, one must bring their profession/business with them.

Moved to Texas in 1965 from the SF Bay area. Graduated from Folsom HS in the mid 50's. Came to send a man to the moon. Been here ever sincwe and can't seem to get away! Love the "No State income tax" and the low property taxes in the county where i reside, Brazoria county. 40 miles to the Gulf, Freeport and a little further to Matagorda, about 60 miles. Some of the best salt water fishing on the planet next to Belize! After all, can't be too bad it's where George W. is from. Looks like the only ones that don't like Texas are the ones that don't live here! The Texas coast is a great place to live, next to San Antonio/Austin of course! That area is much like where you live climaticaly. Richard

I live in Austin and love it!! Talk about laid back. And the culture shock is minimal when moving here from CA. I've been back and forth a couple of times. There is tons to do here and you're never too far from any place you want to go.

Had to follow my folks out here from Southern Cal. Wasn't quite ready to strike out on my own. I wasn't thrilled about the move, thought Texas would be nothing but snakes and tumbleweeds. Now that I've lived here most of my life, I can't think of any other place in the states I'd rather be. I have lived in Houston, Dallas, Waco and now Austin for the past 5 years. Would not want to move back to Houston or Dallas for many reasons given above. Hill country is the place to be. It does get HOT here in the summer, but winters are very mild.

I love TX! Lived in Corpus Christi (although, I don't recommend living there), San Antonio - go Spurs! Gotta love Tony & Tim!!! Next was Austin, then finally, Houston! I love TX! Austin was by far my favorite but is getting to be very expensive (for TX). Houston rocks! Come on down! We'd love to have you! You'll get used to the humidity... I mean you visit AC for goodness sakes! You must be accustom by now.
