You don't have to go outside the reef to get to Mexico. Rocky Point is the only area that the reef touches land.

Lots of misinformation about access to Palm Bay on this thread Dog Lady and on the board in general.
Its going to be a very difficult spot to get supplies into. Small boats can be hired locally and I know of three that make the run for about 400.bz per trip. building is going to be a slow difficult process but not impossible. Forget about Mexico or any road access. I don't know why people post such bull.
Most of these folks posting haven't even been there.

If you talk to the local barge companies, tell them the lot #, explain what you need on that lot for materials, they will put the stuff on your lot. That's what they do. You don't need to know how they do it, they just do it. Sometimes you may not want to know how they did it.

belizeonthebeach,

Excellent point. You do not want to know. You do not need to know.

Locals have been doing this for decades. It works.

Just watch and shake your head and say "Wow, that really worked! Huh"

Yes things can get barged in, but at what expense? Be prepared to add at least 30% to the cost of building, just for transportation to this location. Not to mention on going transportation issues once you move in. There is a reason the land is less expensive there, accessibility.
I would never advocate looking the other way as to how it is done. The reef is fragile and within a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Just because something has been done for decades by locals, doesn't mean everyone should do it too. Materials will probably have to be barged to Basil Jones, off loaded on to smaller skiffs that can go through the shallow waters around the reef. $$$$

I just got off the phone with Caribbean Depot ,, Alex 226-2619.
He said the concrete pier as Suneo Del Mar is as far as he can go with the barge. (still a few miles short) then he added he can go up the back side of Ambergris (lagoon side) and through the channel at the top of the island but it would cost $4,500.00 per trip. Then he admitted he didn't know where Palm Bay was and had not done the trip before.
As to the remark "Locals have been doing this for decades."
I guess if that was true then there would be some friggin houses up there wouldn't there be.

There is only one house up at Palm Bay at the moment and that has been there for maybe 20 years.

It will be costly to build and likely the easiest way will be to barge up along the west coast and then go through the back lagoons.

Without any roads you are talking about some major handling of materials and lots of man power.

Not impossible but certainly it will be a challenge.

I built my home with a skiff. 25' highbow, it's not that hard to get materials anywhere. You just have to get creative.
Elbert, there are a few cabanas up there--and a few piers.

That was my advice, little boats, lots of trips.
