Very well said, Amanda. Society will always have an "other" because it makes it easier to justify treating them inequitably and/or do harm to them. There was a really thought-provoking segment regarding the phenomenon of the "other" on 60 Minutes this past Sunday night which premised that establishing an underdog is a critical part of the natural selection process to which we are genetically programmed for.
