WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): We had so much wind this week even the bonefishing was challenging for our anglers. However - the determined, made it happen! Phillipe went out several times in the back lagoon. The first time he got really lost, the second time he landed a few bonefish, and the third time he killed it in the North Lagoon. A size 8 orange Christmas Island Special was the fly. Maryann landed her first bonefish on the fly today with Captain Cesar. Her husband JT is ecstatic. They were just married last year so this is their honeymoon! Rich was here with his son Ethan as a graduation present for Ethan. Congratulations Ethan on your bonefish! Chris was here with his son Ethan - and they both landed bonefish as well. Craig, Stuart and Spencer all landed bonefish on fly. Lauren landed bonefish on the fly as a bonus for celebrating her big 40. Laura's husband Zach and their good friends - Bob and Kristi and Jen and John were there landing bones on fly as well. (Kristi really, really wants a permit and it will happen someday gal)! The conditions were tough. The water was choppy and off color from all the wind. Guides found areas in the lee, but it was still challenging. Newbie saltwater anglers realized why bonefish are called, "The ghost of the flats." First, you see them, then when you think they are still there, they are gone and you are stuck looking at where they just mudded. Good polarized sunglasses really help and brown lenses really help the fish pop! Congratulations to all of our anglers this week who landed bonefish. Well deserved.

PERMIT (Palometta): Ron is here with his son Scott and they both landed permit on spin with Captain Emir. Captain Kechu knocked it out of the park when Tug landed two permit on spin and the next day he got Tug's wife Cindi into her permit on spin. The family had amazing luck as Deb, Cindi's sister landed her first permit on spin with Captain Cesar. This was the first fish for her slam! Tom was here with his son Ryan - another graduation present. They went out with Captain Luis. Ryan landed 4 on fly and his dad landed 2 on spin. Wow! And Kevin had an amazing day with Captain Jr. Kevin said Jr. poled all day in the big wind as they chased permit around with fly. Kevin was rewarded with 2 permit on fly! I was thrilled for Paul. First cast with Captain Luis and he had his permit on spin. This place has been on his bucket list for fourteen years, so it was really a sweet moment. Chatham and Charlotte where here from Smith Optics fishing with Captain Cinoeh. Charlotte landed her first permit on spin! Add it up, we had a lot of permit landed this week. Nice going!

TARPON (Sabalo): Well, it's been a 5 am start for those that wanted to chase tarpon this week. John and Jack - I know it will happen next time. Way to stay determined. Randy was fishing with his brother David and Captain Alex. The wind was crazy but Alex found a tight place to check for tarpon by the mangroves. Randy had on a purple and black cockroach pattern and he was rewarded with his tarpon on fly. Yay! Ethan landed 2 tarpon on spin with Captain Cesar, one was 100 lbs, the other was about 50. Deb landed two tarpon with Captain Cesar. The first day on spin to complete her slam…and the next day on spin for the photo! Dennis and his son Jason were fishing with Captain Vince. Dennis landed two tarpon on spin, and Jason landed one on spin the next day!

BARRACUDA: Check out Mark's cuda! Over four feet - about 30 lbs, on fly. Captain Cinoeh had him throw his popper sixteen times to the big fish, on the last cast - the cuda charged it!

Grand Slam: Congratulations to Deb Shaffer who got her slam on spin with Captain Cesar. Wow!

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONEFISH - Crazy Charlie, Gotcha, Bunny Gotcha's, CI Special's (orange, pink and pearl), small crabs.

FOR PERMIT - Turneffe Crab, Avalon, Big Squimps!, Mantas shrimp patterns - size 4.

FOR TARPON - Black Death, Chartreuse toad, White toads and bait fish patterns.

Guide of the week: The Guide of the Week goes to Captain JR! All the guides had some spectacular events but JR stands out because of the way he approached the day. Kevin wanted permit on fly, and so they stayed focused. JR knew if he stayed staked up they would have fewer chances, so he poled into the wind and chased permit with fly all day. Of course two permit on fly is great, but Kevin really appreciated JR's approach. He told me before he left, "It is how the day is orchestrated that makes it special. The fish is a bonus." Congratulations JR!

This Week's Summary:

We had some huge wind this week, but our anglers and guides made the best of it. We practiced our casting out on the platform and tried to keep it together out on the flats. Some made the best of the situation by switching to spin which made the day fun. Remember it's the salt. All of your experiences add up and make you a better angler. Reading fish and working with your guide all adds to self discovery. You find what you enjoy and what you don't. Laura, thank you for celebrating your birthday with all of us. Deb and Jan - you get the "casting queen" award. Janet also tried casting fly casting and learned to compliment herself on the good casts and learn from the ones that weren't so perfect. It's looks like the wind is lying down. Let's see what tomorrow brings! Thank you to all of our guests this week. It was a pleasure to share our waters with you.

Cast to your dreams!
